I find it interesting that many populations that practice Buddhism at their primary religion(like Japan, many parts of India and China) are also super dedicated to academic performance and work ethic. It seems kind of counter-intuitive as Buddhism preaches a focus on just being content with what you have, that desire is what causes suffering, etc. One would think these populations would be more “laid back” for lack of a better term.

Probably because they're poor and they realize you have to work to get what you want. So the parents ingrain that mentality in their kids.

When you poor and not a Democrat, if you don’t work you starve.

The dedication and pride that the Japanese people have in general is just really damn impressive. Now it's just geared toward used panty machines instead of military prowess.

Japan isn’t a poor country though, idk how serious they take their religion though. I some in India and China take it very seriously, so you guys may have a point.

Actually thats incorrect (I think).. Now disclaimer I'm not Buddhist but I believe that Buddha taught "Right Livelihood which is about having a fulfilling career when it comes to work.. interpret that how you will

Japan's work ethic is VERY overrated. If you spend time there you realize they as a whole work and study less than Americans. They aren't nearly as productive as generally thought either.

Buddhism also teaches that suffering and pain are rights of passage to get the things you need

Buddhism is less about faith and more about personal discipline through suffering, so it follows.

But one of the core things Buddha taught was that “desire causes suffering” it doesn’t celebrate suffering, Buddhism is more focused on how to relieve suffering and find peace.

They are crazy. Thankfully most of those regions are now secular.
