Thinking of dropping resume' off to nearby free standing ER's. What are the thoughts on this?

Just dropping into various facilities in the area. The majority are small and privately owned. I know the big boys all have impregnable HR departments that one must go through. Is this approach too old school? Shady?

I don't think it is a bad idea at all...

honestly, those of us who do the hiring are typically pretty old school, so dropping by a paper resume and nice cover letter keeps me from having to print it out to read it...

Just wait until they close the sutures before handing off your resume.

Can't hurt. I'd also attach a customized cover letter to it as well if I were you. No one's going to put you on an HR Blacklist for this, so don't worry.

I've always found that showing up in person is a huge positive, shows drive and that you actually want to work

You'd be surprised how much you learn doing this. Learn in general and about each place itself.

How many free standing ER's are there nearby? Feel like I don't see those too commonly in my area. And I'd think the position you're applying for makes a difference. Dropping off a resume for a tech position or housekeeper = break through the clutter. Other positions could be a red flag. What do you fear about HR? Are you hiding something or compensating for inexperience?
Not discouraging you just curious as to what lead you to this?

Probably 8 within 20 minute drive.

ER RN. 12 years experience.

Lack of efficiency (sorry if you're HR). And some of these places are privately owned. There will be no "HR" per say.

Not really as stated above, 12 years in ER's.

I am going the HR route for one of the big boy medical system facilities though.

Just be careful not to be perceived as desperate if you're dropping off a resume in person. I've had a couple people do so, and just so happened that they had been turned away from several other jobs, and where just desperate for work.

Nice. I'm not HR for the record, but hospital admin.
Don't want it to sound like I'm being discouraging, it could be a very good strategy. Good luck in your search.

"here's my resume. Enjoy typing it all into your HR system since I was too lazy to apply electronically."

Yeah, I would imagine many places are going to toss your resume into the trash - especially if there's a large pool of applicants already in the system.

Healthcare offices are busy enough without having to stop what they are doing to cater to walk-in applicants. They have a system for a reason.

I think this is what I was getting at more than anything. Some companies have really good hiring practices that save the manager some time by screening the best applicants, and using peer interviews, etc.

What could be more effective is actually applying online, but also stopping by to show your face.

IMO, I dont think it adds much and could get lost in the shuffle. 8-10 years ago I would have said the opposite.

Unless you're taking to a hiring manager, you are placing in the hands of people who don't give a shite.

Regardless good luck.

Absolutely do it in person.

It's huge to put a face and a respectful disposition to your name.
Show determination and respect and you will go far.

It took me 4 tries to land a PA job at the premier orthopedic clinic in Salt Lake City.
Now I'm doing surgery with one of the best. Mostly because I stayed persistent.

How can you stand out if you mail a resume or apply online?

Good luck!!!!
