We have a 4 y/o girl. Thinking of enrolling her in some type of martial arts/ Karate/ TKD class. Any good recommendations? We live around the Bluebonnet area. TIA

Get your child involved in a normal sport/activity.

brazilian jiu jitsu - teach her to grapple with just about anyone, and add tons of self confidence. She can learn striking later, but this is the foundation.

Wall to Wall Martial Arts in the Denham Springs/Watson area. They focus primarily on Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Your daughter may be a little young, but you can certainly go check out their kid's program and see what you think. I can't sing their praises enough. I trained with them for roughly 10 years before having to move due to work. I highly recommend them.

I second this. Gracie United has a school on Staring. My kid loves it.

Are you looking for her to become a serious fighter or are you looking for something more recreational, family friendly, tournament participation, etc.?

I trained with this group while in BR. They have a great kids program, and the instructors are very nice and knowledgeable.

There's a huge difference between someone who is martial arts because they are a UFC-wannabe and someone who is in martial arts because they want to participate in a recreational sport while still learning self defense. I didn't put my kid in martial arts so he could get in bar fights, take someone to the ground, and submit them in an arm bar. I put him in an organization that is a mix of "traditional" and "sport" karate. I haven't been in a fight since elementary school. My kid has never been in a fight in his life. We don't live in a trailer park, so why focus on fighting? To me, putting a 4 year old in a primarily jujutsu school is ludicrous. I'd put them in something that offers much more variety. Something that gives them a chance to compete in traditional forms, weapons, sparring, and XMA/musical weapons and forms - you take what you've learned and choreograph your own forms for entertainment/exhibition purposes. Why? Because it's more fun. And that should be the focus for a 4 year old. She'll build self confidence, learn how to stand up against bullies, and learn how to defend herself - all while having fun and participating in a recreational sport environment. Choose a system with an extensive tournament network or a school that is heavily involved with the open circuit tournaments.

So hypothetically, if my kid committed to it and trained to be a serious martial artist, would this give him the discipline and confidence to start a YouTube channel? Follow up, about how many subscribers could he expect to get with that level of confidence and kung fu ability?

Yes, more for discipline, self confidence, respect, physical and social skills etc.. Not looking for her to be a WWE or UFC fighter.

Stay on your feet in the street, bro. While you're rolling around on the ground, the other guy's friends are kicking you in the head.

The only answer is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I think it's especially useful for women because a lot of attacks are brought to the ground and BJJ is all about ground defense. I realize she is only 4, but it seems self defense is the outcome you want.
