BATON ROUGE – Alan Coons has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 66-year-old man on July 24, 2024.

Coons was arrested July 29 for the second-degree murder for the stabbing death of Michael Kimbrel.

Baton Rouge Police say officers responded to an apartment complex at 675 Wooddale Boulevard in Baton Rouge for a call for an ‘unresponsive male.’ Upon arrival, officers found Kimbrel’s body on the floor of a bedroom. According to Coons’ arresting documents, Kimbrel’s body was in ‘advanced stages of decomposition.’

An autopsy performed on July 25 revealed that Kimbrel died from multiple stab wounds. The autopsy determined his death to be a homicide.

Officers learned that on July 20, Kimbrel and Coons got into an argument at the apartment where Kimbrel’s body was found. During the incident, witnesses told officers that Coons allegedly had beaten on the door and said he wasn’t going to hurt Kimbrel. In the argument, officers say Coons allegedly tried to get a knife to harm Kimbrel.

On July 21, BRPD says Coons was found unconscious next to his 2007 Ford Taurus at 700 Spain Street. EMS transported him to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and his vehicle was towed. BRPD later obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found a knife covered in blood and hair, a cell phone believed to belong to Michael Kimbrel, multiple areas throughout the car appearing to have blood transfer and a shirt covered in blood.

A week of decomposition is not a nice thing. A couple years ago I was asked by a lady friend of mine from out of state to go to her brother's house to do a welfare check since she hadn't heard from him in a week and after multiple calls, he never called back, which she found odd.

I went to the house and when I saw his vehicle in the driveway I got a bad feeling, especially when walking past it and feeling the hood and it being cold.

I rang the doorbell, knocked hard and still got no response so I made my way around the house and found a back door unlocked so I let myself in.

The smell hit me right away and just a few feet into the house I saw a pair of legs just inside a bedroom door and that was all I needed to see to back out and call the cops. He had on a pair of shorts and his legs were black, blue, green and swollen to the point of looking like they were going to burst.

He had obviously been dead several days. Man, I hated making that phone call to his sister to let her know he was gone.

Its the culture thats the problem....white dude in Milton, Florida lived with his deceased mother on the couch for several weeks in 2015. White folks is dangerous....

Dude that was killed may have once been a minor league baseball player...there is a red stick resident by the same name who pitched a couple of seasons in Charleston, SC.

I don't think it was him. This dead guy was 66 years old.

His sister got with the coroner and they talked about his prior, and ongoing health issues and the fact he had a pretty serious head injury just 18 months prior and that, combined with his age (67) they decided not to do an autopsy.

His body was cremated here in Jefferson Parish and sent to her at her home out of state to be interred in a family plot.
