This is tragic, but I can't really fault the cops on this one.

sorry, but this is Darwinism. the kid was what, in 7th grade probably? that's old enough to know not to reach for a gun if a cop is on you. especially when you've removed the orange tip and it looks like a real gun.

No, it's not.

Police departments do not want to hire people that are too smart. Score too high on the test and you are removed from pool of applicants.

None, but I know enough cops to know that lying is something they do regularly and well. My experience has taught me to automatically disbelieve any story a cop tells.

BUWAHAHAHA, there might be bigger dumshits on OT, when comparing to the Rant.

Protocol. Fake gun or not, the officer had no idea it wasn't real since the orange safety indicator had been removed. The officer acted accordingly.

Yes the situation is sad, but the kid shouldn't have been acting the way he was.

I love to call out cops as much as anyone but with the information we have so far it is impossible to bash the cop. To do so makes one look very stupid

Pulling anything on a cop is asking for trouble unless they ask you to reach for anything. I won't even reach into my glove compartment for license and registration without being told to.

I've never seen a convincing story that this was true. And I know a handful of people who scored perfect or near perfect on civil service exams and near perfect on all exams through the academy that leads me to believe this concept is, at the very least, flawed.

This story is a sad example of why an officer's authority shouldn't be challenged in this type of situation. They have a very tough job, and in the heat of the moment they can misinterpret a situation which has pretty serious consequences, but it's difficult to blame someone whose life is on the line for making the decision they did, though. To hesitate in that situation would very likely cost the officer their life in a future similar situation.
