My son wants to start boxing and has asked for headgear. Any good suggestions?

Considering he wants to box, it’s probably too late.

With so much info on head trauma leading to devestating health issues after said trauma. I don’t know why anyone would want to start boxing.

Check out a site I have used in the past to buy speed bags, bladders for them and swivels.
It is called "Title Boxing" and they have a vast supply of boxing and MMA related equipment. Two headgears that come to me immediately are Reyes and Everlast brands.

Winning if you don't mind the price. Otherwise just go with everlast.

Your coach needs to teach him the sweet science, how to hit and not get hit.
If he has the reflexes let him model after Floyd mayweather

You'll get much better suggestions on r/amateur_boxing.

He's not wanting to start boxing competitively. He wants to do some very ligjt sparring with his brother and friends to learn some basic self-defense methods. They want to learn how to throw accurate punches and learn evasive moves without hurting each other.

That's all good, but they are likely not going to learn much doing this on their own in the back yard. To learn footwork, proper punching technique, eluding punches through head movement and parrying punches with your gloves, etc. they'd do better going to a real gym with a boxing coach.
Just because they go to a gym, it doesn't mean they need to become amateur fighters. There's all levels of training available at local gyms and you'd be surprised how many people do a boxing regimen just to get, or stay in shape.

Everlast, again I have not stepped in the ring in along time the gloves and equipment I hope got better. I am sure there are more brands out there today.
In my day they call them clubs. The club I went to sold the equipment for youth classes along with the training to keep the cost down for parents.
Lafayette area had a real good boxing coach in the 80's as boxing was the thing after all those rocky movies in the late 70's and 80's.
Good luck to him he may learn some discipline, get alot of exercise, and have some fun. It is a sport you have to learn discipline and the more he puts into it the better he will get.
