You want the dude's kids to grow up to be bank robbers?

Here's my suggestion after living there for six years: don't do it.

There is no such thing as an easy commute, at least with anything that involves a motor vehicle.

The school I'll be working for offers 50 percent off monthly MTA passes. So I'll likely be leaning heavily on the T for my commute.

Then you don't want to be in Charlestown. No T stop there.

If you can live along the red line that would be ideal.

I would second Somerville if you need to be North of the city. You can find places within your listed budget there. I'm not as familiar with the rates in Charlestown but it seems like you've got some people here that are. There is a T stop there next to Bunker Hill CC but they're more spread out than other parts of the city.

ETA: Charlestown is fairly walkable to almost all of downtown Boston. Somerville isn't but there are some nice places in the square up there. One of the few really good barbecue places if I remember correctly. Plus its close to Cambridge (which is likely out of your price range).

He is going to be hard pressed to find a place in charlestown in that price range honestly. Plus if he's planning on using the T as a primary mode of transportation, then charlestown is not the place to be.

Then definitely use the MBTA website and google maps heavily for planning. That is extremely helpful for planning how you can get around. The bus system is decent, but the T is much, much easier.

If you're going to be relatively accessible to North Station ( underneath the Garden) then living in Medford would not be terrible. West Medford is the first stop north on the Lowell line.

Eta: of the commuter rail

Um. Sorry. I was joking about the bank robber part. Is "kids" like a derogatory term now?

Barbecue

Yes, that would be Redbones in Davis Square in Somerville. To me, it's the only barbecue restaurant in the entire part of the country that you could open up in, say, Memphis Tennessee and it would do okay.

But that doesn't mean you want to live in Slumerville I mean Somerville. it has gotten better, but it still sucks and because of proximity to Cambridge it's getting more and more expensive, although really everything is.

If I had to go back and become LSU in MA again, I would live west of the city and commute in from that direction by car or rail. You could also get to Haverhill from the west on 495. There's still mucho traffic but you avoid the city.

How have I never been here? I know what I'm doing on Saturday...

Somerville is on the cheaper end of the spectrum near the city, but it is rapidly improving. I honestly don't know too much about places west of the city so I can't chime in on that.
