IMO, this is the real reason behind a lot of companies pushing so hard to get people back in the office.

Overall, I think hybrid is the best approach.
Same.
I have 4 Zoom meetings today, so was planning on WFH until I had a 5th meeting scheduled in person by my boss.
I have enough in person meetings and jobsite visits that fully remote would never work, but hybrid is a nice perk.

How much does productivity slip?
I frick around way more than 3.5hrs when in the office.

I do not disagree at all. I had one employee turn in a work log showing that they answered a total of 4 emails.....For an 8 hour day.

A previous claim was that remote workers spent work time "shopping and having sex". To make up 3.5hrs, I'd be doing some serious shopping!

FWIW, I have an actual office set up in a spare bedroom at home.
Same. I've always worked from home some so we've always had a spare bedroom to be used as my home office.
I don't have any problems staying productive at home. It would be pretty obvious if I wasn't getting my work done or if I wasn't available or responsive during the day.
I do enjoy getting out of the house and going to the office a day or two per week though. It breaks up the monotony of sitting in my house all day.
My wife goes to the office every day and our kids are older so no real distractions other than TD

They figured this out really fast but they still haven’t figured out the relationship between a living wage and productivity.

I refuse to mix work and home again. Did it for several weeks, had enough.
I have to be around other people when I work or I get bored as shite.

I will not ever take another job that requires me to be in the office.

Are they not doing their job?
If so then it is ineffective management and not working from home.

What was on this person's plate that day? Did they miss any work assignments or projects?
I think what remote work is doing is shining a light on just how little the average office/corporate worker does.

If I went in every day I'd be the only one there on my team most of the time. We have everyone in for meetings occasionally but most days when I go in there's maybe one other person there. Our building has plenty of people there every day but just not in my particular department.

Their remote option has been relinquished.

No it isn't. Blaming management for lack of assignments or lack of productivity or lack of role clarity is a such a chicken shite cop out. Its crutch used by the lazy/stupid/incompetent.
This isn't college. Find something that is a problem, convert it into a non-problem, let your manager know you're handling shite, move up in the world.
OR, sit on your arse, do only what you're told to do, and continue being a little tiny cog in the machine for the rest of your boring arse work from home life.

quote:I don't see it as "micromanaging". It is a combination of 2 things:
Why though? If the work is still getting done, why micromanage?
1. in lieu of "managing by walking around", which has its merits.
2. Accountability- and that's the trade off. If a supervisor wants to do his job he must supervise. If the employee is remote that's the only way to supervise other than showing up at their house.
quote:yep, no argument there. If they are still employed it is both the supervisor's and employee's fault. If they don't meet deadlines and show their work at the definied "milestones", then they now have to come in to the office is the only other solution other than termination. Not because they are a slacker, because we agree location doesn't change that, but because the supervisor is incapable of supervising remote workers.
The same people that slack WFH also slack in the office.

These people are the problem. If you have to hover over and pester your employees for them to be productive, be a better manager.

So what. You measure output, not hours "put in."
Not every profession is built for remote work, but most can easily be adapted for it, at least partially.

95% of the “I’m more productive at home” people are full of shite and trying to justify it.

The frick it isn't. A good manager shouldn't have to sit in their employee's office to make sure they are doing their work.
No doubt there are people who can't handle being self directed, but putting them in an office doesn't solve that problem.

Nobody does this.
If a manager can't manage employees and give them work, then they shouldn't be a manager.

Heaven forbid managers have to actually manage.
