Thing about online is your relationship with your bike shop. My local shop will do all standard tune ups for free since I bought it from there. Huge plus. Also, if I had to build up a bike from scratch (usually how they are shipped), I'd be in trouble. I could maybe do it with a manual and some specialty tools, but I'd rather go through a shop. If you don't have a good shop around you and are handy, there's nothing wrong with ordering online.

nah bikesdirect ship virtually put together. plus you learn a little about how stuff works in case you have a mechanical on the road.

Add to that assembly cost and tune up for an expensive bike after assembly

Additional 250$

Also, they'll do a free fitting, which is nice.

But bike's direct only ships a few random brands. I have heard you can buy a frameset, and sometimes get a whole bike off of bikes direct, salvage the group set and sell the frame cheaper than buying a group set by itself.

People bike everywhere here. Even when it's 30 below in the winter. they just winterize their bikes and they're good to go

This is somewhat overrated I think. I think you can get a good fit without a shop. I mean as you get more flexible, your fit will change (as far as stack and reach). You need to get your legs dialed in, but that's not rocket science. Some reading online along with you tube and you can get yourself set up.

What's a decent hybrid bike for $500 or less?

I've been riding the walking/bike paths here a lot for exercise and want a hybrid. I currently just have a beach cruiser and a commuter bike(that has left me stranded with a flat 3 times in the past 2 weeks....I'm done with that bike). Don't want a road bike cause I don't want to ride roads. Don't want a mountain bike cause I'll never actually go mountain biking(my husband has already laughed at my price range....he's such a bike snob with his $5000 mountain bike). Want something with more durable tires(tread wise) in case I want to bring the bike with me on camping trips to ride in gravel.

Don't laugh at the price range OT bike snobs. I just know the amount of times I'll ride it and don't need to spend several grand on a bike.

seems like your husband would be best qualified to give you advice here.

eta and $5,000 is hardly a bike 'snob'. now if he was in the 10-12k range that might qualify.

I was curious of other people's opinions. I'm debating even bringing him with me looking at local bike shops cause I don't know just how annoying he will be if I pick out a bike that isn't "good enough" m
I can see it now "really....you want that bike?!" With a look of disdain on his face.

you know what I mean. And considering he spent more on that damn bike that my engagement ring.....I consider that a bike snob to a small degree.

He would love it but I have no desire. And I'm very accident prone. He already knows people that have died mountain biking.....my luck I would end up in that number.

Also as a nurse if I get hurt I can't work. At all.

This would be me mountainbiking

Uphill climbing: me getting off bike to walk it

It's pretty clear which one is more important to him.

he started making more money after we got engaged. He saved for that bike for a good while.

It's ok.....anytime I want something expensive I can just say "bike and Jeep" and he can no longer tell me it's too expensive.

i hear you. road riding is definitely safer to some degree; less unexpected debris and 'bravado' to try & bunny hop fallen logs or take small cliffs.

as someone who owns 12 bikes i'm not about to comment on whether your husband loves you more or less. i'm sure you appreciate he's making the effort to be active.
