Midnight Tuesday into Wednesday on the Euro. Putting snow on the South shore. Always with something six days away, it's a model, but this is the first time the Euro has come in this cold and dropping snow on SELa. Euro falling more in line with GFS this afternoon (weird to say after hurricane season).

Once again, it's just a single model run and far from gospel.

For the EURO to be calling for up to 2" of SNOW on the SOUTHSHORE, it needs to be paid attention to. It'll certainly start conversations on social media.

Yeah I need to monitor all if this and decide if it’s worth the risk of getting stuck. I have until Saturday/Sunday morning to decide.

Good. You ought to be able to make a pretty informed estimate by then.

6:00am 1/6/18:

That's after damn near a whole week of highs in the low to mid 20's. Although this is hard to believe --- 24 degrees almost to Miami, FL???

Max temperature (essentially the daytime highs) in the preceding 6 hours at 6PM on 12/31, 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5:

So the Euro is suggesting most of LA won't see temps above 50 for nearly 5 days, with most of those high temps being 40 or below. And just for good measure, "snow depth" @ 6AM Wednesday morning...

Canadian is running too cold to be believed right now. Can't buy that without more support. GFS and Euro aren't pulling a deep south deep freeze yet.

Completely agree. It's still something to behold to see a model indicate 6 fricking degrees in the BR area.

Sheeeeeeet.

That's pushing zero in Houston. There'd have to be some significant snow on the ground for that to be even plausable.

It could be, but it's not likely sitting as close to the gulf as we all do. The snow helps really get the cooling mechanism going on a clear night. Hence why I'd suspect those super cold temperatures projected are partially driven by snow cover.

20% chance of freezing rain is much better than what was forecasted as of last week.

.LONG TERM... Here is where the forecast gets interesting. There remains some considerable disagreement on the eventual evolution of the next system, which comes in late in the weekend. The GFS has backed off a little on the insanely cold temperatures it was forecasting for the area. Still, the ECMWF has been consistent on less of an impact to the area as the colder temperatures stay to our north and east. Much of the forecast, including any precipitation chances were basically a blend of the GFS and ECMWF. That continues to allow for a short period of time late on Sunday night into very early Monday morning where some wintry precipitation could be an issue for the northwest portions of the forecast area. For now, opted to go with a short period of a chance of freezing rain with no accumulation. Beginning Monday morning, several nights of freezes would be likely with hard freezes in the northern parts of the forecast area and temperatures close to freezing on the southshore away from the coastal areas on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
