1985 broke arse me had a lot of fun drinking and eating for free for a few days at the pre-rush open houses. Well, I did up until the time it was made clear that I was a poor. On the upside, I almost learned the greek alphabet.

And that same week the story of a rather awkward but innocuous 3 minute conversation with an Omega about the possibility of me rushing Omega (I had no idea at the time they were an all black frat) has thirty years later grown to such epic proportions that I will argue for hours with a straight face with my now grown daughters that I was the first white Omega in LSU history. They ADORED it when I took a can of gold spray paint to an old set of army boots and told them I was getting ready for a "reunion".

The beer situation changed pretty much yearly when I was there. My night was beer truck in yard with actives putting your head under the tap. Apparently, some kid got a tooth knocked out somewhere along the row, and the next year, we had to have tables in front of the taps and beer served in cups. By the time I left, we could not even use club funds for beer, and had to launder it through the social chairman.

Google the lyrics to song "Desperately Wanting" by Better Than Ezra.

Some say the song is about the rush process at LSU back in the early 90's.

I think it definitely is. One of my favorite memories from that time was when we saw Better Than Ezra at Murphy's right before the album with that song on it came out. Either 95 or 96. It was an unannounced surprise show. I distinctly remember hearing that song (Desperately Wanting) live at that show before it was ever released.

Fraternities had bid night, sororities had bid day.

I was in an "Old Row" frat at AU, and we got the dogshit hazed out of us as pledges but it never involved drinking alcohol excessively. So I'm always incredulous when I read about LSU or other schools involving excessive consumption.

What made me lose sleep at night were the pledge football games with other frats. They were sanctioned fist fights. The brothers would wager 100-500 cases of beer on the outcome, and the pledges would square off in the arena. I took at least a half a dozen haymakers to the back of my neck. It was chaos.
