I repaired medical equipment for 20 years in the Army. The Navy and Air Force also have the job. They all train at Fort Sam Houston, TX. The job gives you pretty good experience, great training and transitions well into the civilian world. It's nothing to get out after 6 years and start at $25+ an hour.

I'm assuming he meant becoming a Warrant Officer.

Marine Corps Band member. A buddy of mine was a drummer in one of the marine corp bands stationed in North Carolina. He would chill on the base and drink, occasionally play gigs in DC and NYC and drink, go to the beach and drink, and pick up trashy Jersey chicks who were fascinated by his southern accent. After 4 years, he's back home as a civilian making use of the GI Bill. OOrah

Naval Nuclear Power School as an ET. If he decides to go that route, bump this thread and I can offer advice. He can easily transition into a well paying job after leaving service. Also, nukes get huge bonuses, and usually try to offer reenlistment in tax free zones to sweeten the deal - usually 60-80K.
There are a few colleges that offer nuclear engineering degrees in recognition of completion of the nuclear power program. Either way, the GI kicker they throw on top of everything would allow him to go to school for anything he so desired. Plus, he'll get to spend two years in Charleston (Goose Creek, but close enough). Not a bad gig.
If he does go this route, just a heads up to him, the recruiter will come to awards day with a few huge checks, like the ones they hand out in golf. I found that a little distasteful, but I'm not big on the spotlight.
I went this route, spent a year there, and ended up getting out when my mom was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
ETA: One downside to Nukes, they really aren't as free to roam during liberty in port. It depends where, but the reactor usually has to be heavily manned per treaties.

Combat Engineers or go home...
In all honesty, any branch except Coast Guard. I enlisted when I was 17 right before Iraq started and I have loved every minute. It's given me a great career and paid for my education as well.
MOS's that offers training that is applicable to the real world like Aviation Mechanic (15M or 15J in the Army) or Medic (68W in the Army) are great stepping stones. After 8 years enlisted with 2 of those in the NCO Corps, I jumped to the Dark Side and I am glad I made that decision.
Good luck to your son.
