What about one of the military academies? Seems decently smart if he's scoring upper 20's as a junior.

edit: assuming he wants to be all he can be.

Perfect timing. He probably won't ever go into combat, but he'll still get all the benefits and high horse-ness.

Navy deployments are getting worse and worse. No more fun ports.

I went on two WESTPAC cruises along with a few 3-6 week excursions up/down the West coast from Vancouver to Acapulco.

When it was bad, it was horrible, when it was good, it was great...if that makes sense.

Again, it worked for me. Had just enough sense to keep my nose clean and out of trouble, see many awesome ports (Australia being my fav.) and have my college tuition covered once I was discharged. However, I also witnessed many young men go down in flames who came in as good kids but got caught up in excessive drunkenness, drugs, etc. when they probably should have just stayed on the farm.

I'd want my son to be in a work environment in which most would be similar to his intelligence/maturity level. As an electrician, I worked and lived with some really good people but there were a LOT of dumbasses in the engineering department.

I remember being at DLI Monterey, many, many moons ago. When you saw the young troops walking around (joint school - all branches) in civilian clothes - if you saw "regular" looking kids, you couldn't really tell if army or air force - although if the gals were good looking and/or the guys were pretty skinny - probably USAF. The jarheads were completely obvious by the haircut (and I don't think they had more than a half-dozen female Marines in the company).

And the navy? Except for the SEAL, they were all fat.

Air Traffic Control in the AF. It's not as hard as people think and then he could go either DOD or FAA once he decides to get out.

The ones that sit in an air conditioned Combat Systems control room and watch shite get blown away..

ETA: This lead to an air conditioned electronics job, which allows me to make fun of the "armor branch" that sweats their asses off trying to make a living. Op asked what his son could parlay into a civilian career..Who wants their kid to be a grease monkey

Good thread. My son is an 8 year old advanced in math for his age. He is enamored with planes and we go to any air show we can get to. Thunderbirds are in Rome, Ga this year and he cannot wait.

Could change...but right now he wants to be a Thunderbird or Blue Angel pilot. Kind of like many of us dads who aspired to be major leauge ball players...LOL. But glad he is setting that bar high. He already knows about the Naval Academy and the AF Academy and wants to be selected to one. Told him daddy needs to befriend a congressman in the next few years,LOL.

Chair Force gets all the women. And all the DoD money.

If I was young and joined, Id try be Intel for spec war or similar badass job. Aircraft maintenance is for people that don't have the physical want/capability/security clearence to do the "cool shite" I.E. aircrew, SpecWar, Ect.

Navy I'll have the USS Ford out here soon. And the 35 (maybe.) Kinda cool shite for newer guys.

But.

I can only speak of west coast fixed wing. Our squadron did 8 month, 10 month and 9 month deployments in 4 years. That shite sucks. No matter what ports to visit. You will get tired of that side of the world.

The job itself (AE) isn't bad at all, it'd all the bullshite that goes along with the job. But hey, if that's what a young guy wants to do, by all means.

Navy girls are loose as all hell. Ain't worth the trouble. Air force has the women worth it.

Preparing for every uber grunt to see this one

Say no to engineers/sappers, most mechanic jobs, supply, or finance. Supremely overhyped in terms of after service skills. And be cautious of intel as well, you may just be a paperbitch in a vault.

Sounds like a smart enough kid he could do ROTC or try and get into one of the academies.

I was Navy '93 to '99. Fire Controlman.
Advanced electronics training for 10 months, Aegis ORTS C-school for 9 more months. Ship to shore rotation was 5-3, got out after my 6 year commitment. I went straight to work when I got out and things have been good.

because I have been where you have been...seen and done the things you are doing...

try pulling phase maintenance on the back of an FFG in the Persian Gulf....

ive been on the flight deck...crawled in the hell holes to find connectors while troubleshooting..

done the long deployments away from family

put up with a-hole maintenance chiefs...

you are whining about something I take pride in having done...and came out better because of it...

man up

AF or Navy.

24 year vet of the Army and Army Reserve here, tell him to go in the Navy. If he hits a 25-30 on the ACT he may qualify for scholly money at Tulane, they have a Navy Rotc program and he could get an engineering (or whatever)degree from Tulane for zip! he would have to serve 4 years of active duty to satisfy his contract.
My twin sons had that option...both went Army 11b, one in the 82nd one in the 101st.
