You are right it would have been very expensive but they had backers willing to help pay for it. Those same backers are not willing to pay to renovate it

Who were the backers they had lined up?

My kids love it. That's all I care about. It's close to my house and cheap entertainment for them

I wonder how many people upvoted this but don’t live in Baton Rouge?

Took my daughter there today, first time there like about 15 years... absolutely pathetic. No reason to keep it other than making another excuse for BREC to line their pockets with tax payer dollars.

They let it go thinking that they were moving it.

It was a pretty nice zoo about 10 years ago. Sounds like they are about to spend a lot of money to expand and refurbish it again.

Lafayette zoo still has chicken wire to keep some of the animals in.

Audubon Zoo is the best in Louisiana. Baton Rouge zoo was just about perfect for the metro area's size until they started letting it fall apart about 10 years ago.

A few exhibits in Monroe are the same way...couple that with a hippo room that smells like stale death, and a filthy concrete tiger exhibit.... or maybe it's a lion. I just know either was it was depressing to see....I've never felt so bad for an animal. It was pacing back and forth just bumping into walls...you could tell it wasn't right.
