Basketball tournament: Girls not allowed on boys team

The pint-sized 10-year-old is described by her coach Kevin Frey as a “stud” and a “superstar”. Jaelyn plays on a 4th grade boy’s club team, Frey Basketball Academy.
“The girls didn’t really give me a competition,” Jaelyn said.
“If there’s not another team that she can go to where the competition is going to be equal so that she can continue to get better, why hold her back,” said Barry Bates, Jaelyn’s father.
“I’ve never seen it before,” Frey said. “Not at this level.”
“You hear comments of, ‘Who’s got the girl?’ and quickly they realize that she’s just not any girl.”
Having a girl on a boy’s team hasn’t been a problem for the coach, the players or any of the tournaments Frey Basketball Academy plays in.
That is, until a week ago.
One of the state’s big tournaments is the upcoming Southwest Salsa Slam, a qualifying tournament for the national championships at the level Frey Basketball Academy’s fourth grade team plays at. It’s organized by New Mexico Select and tips off in a little more than two weeks.
Jaelyn’s team was signed up to play. But last week, tournament organizers notified the team that as long as Jaelyn suited up for the squad, the team wouldn’t be allowed to participate.

After a number of parents and Frey himself complained, the tournament sent another email:
“The intent of the rule is simple; if you allow a 4th grade girl to play on a 4th grade boys team, how do you stop a 6’10? freshman boy from being allowed to play on a freshman girls team… NM Select will not bend or change our rules.”
Those rules are in line with AAU guidelines, which also prohibit girls from playing on boys. But Frey said the tournament is not bound by AAU rules and should make an exception for fourth grade teams.

This is not a Title IX issue since there are plenty of girls teams in the tournament.
If the level of competition is the issue, then why not have the girl play "up" on a 5th or 6th grade girls team?
Why hire a lawyer?

I saw a clip of the little girl playing ball on TV today.
She is ridiculously good.
She is ridiculously good.

Oh she's fantastic. I've seen her play. She could easily land a spot on a 6th or 7th grade girls team if she wants better competition.

I was driving through New Mexico yesterday and listened to an interview with both the tournament director and the father of the girl.
This has nothing to do with the girl being too good and everything to do with the father being out of his fricking mind. No question she is good, but the parents are seriously suffering from little league disease. IF its simply a question of the girl not being able to find competition equal to her ability they could easily put her into an older girls league.
Just another parent living his athletic dreams through his kid.

Easy, use common sense New Mexico. You have the power not to let a 6'10" freshman play with girls, because that is stupid and an absurd example. Common sense says that's not fair. Letting agirl play with boys is in no way an advantage. I've played pick up with woman on my college's team and I can hang with them.....I'm 5'8" and white

So, I can tell my wife I'm getting a promotion?

If the other teams in the tournament refused to bake a cake for her same-sex wedding, they would be forced to let her play.
Right?
Right?

Neither is letting her play up. Which is standard practice for kids with superior skill.
She is an advantage for her "boys" team. She was tournament MVP in her last tournament.

I've only played ball with one girl that was a college player and I was kinda shocked. She was all conference in a D2 school.
We were running 4 on 4 and the guys were a combination of pick up players, a few that played some high school ball and one guy that played some JUCO.
She couldn't roll with us at all. Just got destroyed.
I was kinda surprised. I thought she'd do OK.

Jesus could you imagine being ten and having some chick roll up and break your ankles, or swat your layup into the third row? How would you recover.
