Daughter has been accepted to the 1st grade. We have 2 days to decide. I don't know anything about it but heard that it is excellent in other states. Being that it just opened and in its first year, not much info to go by.

Hoping the OT can help us make this decision. Daughter was at St Jude then Gifted program. What the OT say about this school?

My oldest goes to K next year. We are going to try and send her there. From what I have read about the curriculum, the kids will be challenged and well educated.

Does the LDOE have its fingers on this school in any way?

I've been looking for some more info on them for my daughter. I found it interesting that they apparently do not provide bus service. I would think that would mean it would be composed mostly of kids in the immediate area.

My kids would be there if it was located closer to LSU area.

I believe BASIS started here in Tucson. They are now all over the state. I know some families that send their kids to BASIS, and they are happy with it. Some families go there until HS and switch because of no athletics and overall not a very well rounded group of kids socially.

Charter schools are great for test scores but awful for actual learning. Basis got in BR because they promised for the first 5 years 20percent of their students will be from low income families living in property.

20% sounds reasonable. Most public schools here seems to be >50% low income.

Another sore spot is that only two of BASIS’ 23 charter schools provide federally subsidized free meals; many of its schools report having no poor children at all. At its poorest school, BASIS DC, located in the nation’s capital, only 17 percent of its students qualify for free lunch. BASIS Baton Rouge is planning to offer federally subsidized free meals, but it has estimated that only 20 percent of its students in Baton Rouge would qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast, a figure below almost every public school in the state.

And I don’t think taxpayers should have to foot the bill for your daughter to attend a “privately run” school.

As opposed to taxpayers footing the bill to send her to shitty publicly run schools?

My son started 3rd grade there last week. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m pretty optimistic.

It’s first grade. Send her. If it turns out to not be a good school, move next year. She won’t be permanently damaged by attending a subpar school for one year in first grade.

On the other hand, it could turn out to be a fantastic school and you are set.
