What age did you really start working with your kid? When before tball? I have a 4 year old that I still feel like it's rather young. I'm not putting him in that wee ball nonsense where they do nothing but chase the ball around and do nothing.

I plan on putting him in soccer in the fall to get an idea of playing on a team with other kids and teaching him basics of doing that.

I'd say get him out of diapers and get him used to wiping his own arse before you start worrying about what level of baseball and soccer to get him started in.

Speaking from experience. It was the bane of my Saturday morning.

Yeah, I made sure to tell my parents thank you for pissing away all their weekends when I finally stopped playing travel soccer.
That sport is played at the worst times and in the worst weather.

I made my son hit foam balls when he three and taught him how to turn his hips and have quick hands through the hitting zone. By the age of 6 he was dominating. He was growing tired of all the practicing at home but I helped him understand the importance of out working his peers. Once we started travel ball he saw that I had been telling him the truth and now that he is 11 baseball is all that matters to both of us. I am very proud that he made that decision on his own and that he has given himself a realistic shot at playing MLB one day.

When our youngest son turned 4 in December we decided to give t-ball a try the following spring. We also decided to see how he reacted after 2 weeks of practice before pulling him or staying. Our oldest played travel ball so the youngest pretty much grew up at the ball parks playing with other kids and always involved a ball so we kind of knew he had more athleticism than your average 4yr old because if that.

He enjoyed practices and the coaches were great, considering everyone else was 5.
Never had to push him or drag him to practices or games...and now he's 16 and just finished his sophomore season of high school baseball...and still loves it. He gets a 3 week break and then he starts playing with his Showcase team and he goes until the end of July.
During his "off weeks" he will hit at least once a day religiously, work on his Catcher Mechanics and do his arm recovery regiment.

Soccer is great sport for kids because it's more free form and they can run and be kids.
Baseball is more technical and not as much "fun". My 9yo plays both and loves them both but he started playing baseball late (last year was his first year) and he is one of the worst on his team although not be much considering some of the kids have been playing for 5 years already. The athleticism he has learned is soccer clearly gives him an opportunity edge over some of the year round baseball kids. In a year or so his technique will catch up but his athleticism will still be superior.
Help you son he an athlete first and then focus on sport specific skills.
Just my two cents. Above all have fun and let them learn to enjoy getting better every day/practice.
