My son is 7 and in coach pitch. This is recreation not some serious travel ball. He has been using a 24in/12oz bat since tee ball at 5. Well we got him a new bat. Just a bigger one from the Wally World. It’s 25in/16oz.

When practicing with it today. He was swinging under most of the pitches. Does anyone have advice on how to help him with the new bat being that it is heavier? I’m wondering if I should just let him use the old bat to finish out the season or if he wants to use new one, he can. I just don’t want to mess him up with his confidence. He had been hitting better than I thought he would when watching him at his games. I only played baseball a couple of seasons when little, so I’m not sure what’s the best route. Any tips?

Depends. How many Orioles scouts are attending Braydyn’s games?

Throw a donut on it in the on deck circle. This should make the bat feel lighter and improve his bat speed/control.

Or he’s 7. Just let him use his old bat

26/16 is probably right unless he’s bigger kid. Make sure he has a 2 3/4 barrel so he had the best chance of making contact. That’s all ya looking for at the younger ages anyway.

Correction on the new bat, it’s 26/15. But still slightly heavier. And no he doesn’t lift. He is pretty slim so if anything he can be a slap hitter like ichiro

Tell him to watch the ball until it hits the bat. Tell him he is the only person in the world that gets to see the ball actually stop and change directions. Once this actually happens, he'll be hooked. "C'mon man, Watch the ball hit the bat, watch the ball change directions" while he's at the plate.

This will also teach him not to pull his head out when he swings.

Hit off the tee (tell him the Major leaguers and college players do it every day). When he finishes his swing, he should be staring straight at the top of the tee.

Then toss him some wiffle balls. Then either tennis balls or baseballs.

15 on the tee, 15 wiffles and 15 pitches … he got 45 reps and never realized it.

Too Late Advice: Next time, let him borrow some teammates' bats till he finds one he likes. Then buy that one or similar.

Unsolicited infield practice suggestion: Near end of practice put in some of your infielders and hit ground and fly balls … with the outfielders running the bases. If it kid gets out, just let him stay on the base and keep hitting. This means the SS and 2B have to field and make the throw under pressure. Both infielders and base runners start to understand situations (force out, not forced, etc.)

Sound alike pitching problem. Coach should be pitching to where the kid is swinging at that age.

Coach shouldn’t be going for a no hitter

Agreed. This is more important than anything I posted.

Agree. He is hitting well for games. We just got the bat. He has not used it for games. We just went outside today with the bat and threw the ball to him to see how he liked the bat. He was under it most of the time with his swing. Just debating on either just having him get used to it, or wait til season over to switch. I’m thinking about asking him if he wants to wait to switch after season. He was pretty excited about the new bat. Just wanted to ask you guys if there were any pointers on how to get him to quickly adjust to new bat.

It’ll happen in time. Let him swing his new bat. MLB ain’t scouting these games. Let the kid have fun.

25/15 go to Marucci and get a used one. Walmart bats are trash.

50 solid swing per night 5x a week. Have a target set up for him to swing at with the focus being the sweet spot.

If you don’t get the new marucci CAT 9, you kid won’t have the best.

My son had the same issue when he was about that age. I was going by what I swung when I was young but my son was not the same build. We went lighter which enabled him to swing faster and make contact. He wasn’t swinging for the fences but he was able to hit and run.
