Correct me here if I'm mistaken. There was the 442, then Hurst Olds and the W30 was the top of the performance option package?
W30 was the top performance package on the 442. Hurst/Olds was a separate model. (A H/O is not a 442. Originally the order code was W45. W46 for air cars) The '68 and '69 H/O's were the only GM midsize cars with engines larger than 400 cubic inches.

I have a black 68 Roadrunner just like the one that just sold for 28k, it's in need of restoring and there is no way I could get it done for $28,000. Economics in that market is hard to get my head around.

These auctions are crap shoots. You never know what kind of buying or not buying crowd will be on hand.

You can do that before the auction. It is very common. And ask for any documentation.

Absolutely.
Buddy and I went to look at a 66 vette. 4th owner, said everything matched. Right off the get go, the engine doesn't match. He was stunned and heartbroken. Said previous owner sold it to him as original. Who knows, maybe he didn't know either. Happens too many times.
To make things worse. GM destroyed build data on early cars, so without a tank sticker, who knows what options it came with.
