Catalan capitol during the World Cup. Always interesting.

Oh yeah, you should definitely find a bar to watch the WC games at. In european cities it's a fantastic experience. It's like superbowl parties on roids... and in the streets.

Headed there in August - can't wait.

We should have a full week there but are considering side trips or potentially just traveling to several spots in Spain. Any suggestions on how to balance time in Barcelona vs time elsewhere in the country if we're there for a week?

Use the Ave (the high speed train to Madrid). You have a week, spend three days in Barça and four days in and about Madrid. It will be jammed up in August as everyone's on holiday. Expect lines, read up on what you want to do and see and then ask the locals through Fodors or other travel sites their opinions.

I was there during the 2006 champions league final when Barcelona beat Arsenal to win it. The city was electric for 24 hours of non stop crazy.

It's just a great city of beautiful people.

I have been twice, and agree with what most everyone has said. Check out the Gaudi park and church, take a walk down Las Ramblas, and take in the view along the beach. Just be warned that some things cannot be unseen.

Also, I highly recommend a day trip to Montserrat. While it isn't necessarily an exciting place to visit, it truly is breathtaking.

Pickpockets were something I never felt like were a problem, but I alway took basic precautions. However, I did sit at a cafe and watch a group of street hustlers rip a bunch of people off.

Just be smart about it. Don't wear fancy jewelry out (or be wary of it), keep your stuff in your front pockets, and for women I suggest pickpocket-proof purses. They have reinforced straps since pickpockets would cut them, grab the purse and run off.

This.

We invested in a purse for her and backpack with for me with steel reinforcement and locks. Had not one problem....suffice to say though if you have to be smart.

Go south towards Gibraltar. The scenery gets better as do the beaches depending on what strikes your fancy.

Go do this building at night. We stayed down the street from it and went to a concert on top of it during the night while we were there. The views were pretty kick arse. We did a tour of it well and that was kinda boring but you will enjoy it.

I didn't really enjoy Las Ramblas that much but the marketplace was pretty cool. Walking around the city was probably the best part seeing all the old buildings (there is a wall there built duing roman times) mixed in with the new kinda rocked.

I honestly thought the trip would suck and my wife talked me into it. I'm glad she did.

1) Free walking tours...google them ahead of time, they're awesome...I had a cute Irish girl as my tour guide

2) Nude beaches aren't always a good thing...I saw some okay titties and some terrible titties

3) Cocaine flows like wine...check out the nightlife, I hate "clubs" but I had a fricking blast at the clubs there

4) There is a frick ton to see and the transit goes everywhere

5) I had no problems with pickpockets but I kept my wallet and passport in my front pockets just in case...

enjoy, it's my second favorite trip ever

Went for a weekend while studying abroad in Italy.
1)Chicks I was with were almost pickpocketed immediately on the subway.
2)Stayed off Las Ramblas and was really nice. Reminded me of the French Quarter with vendors and street performers.
3)Went out at the beach bars at night and it was awesome, just don't waste your money going to the ice bar.
Also, they have hot chicks in bikinis dance at the bars. I would keep your wallet in your front pocket or check it alot.

Place sounds great. I'm going in December over New Years.

Here's hoping it is just as cool then as the summer

On Formentera (an island off the coast in the Mediterranean), I saw a woman with a single mastectomy, topless. That was interesting, to say the least.

I was in Spain for 2 months though, so after we went to the beach enough times, you got used to it.

Wish I spent more time there

Madrid is also a fun city. Definitely do recommend. That said, I saw some gypsy women try to steal from a girl's booksack on a walking tour. They were literally doing it right next to me and I was on the tour, so I just stared at them up and down and basically gave them a "frick off" look. They didn't take the hint so I pushed the fat one carrying the map to make them look like "tourists" into the one trying to do the pick-pocketing and they sulked off.

Just be aware of your surroundings and your valuables and it's not a problem.

Oh, and Barcelona has one of the most beautiful populations of any city I've been to... probably best except for maybe Reykjavik.

Look into renting an apartment. I got one that was really nice for less than a hotel. Think I found it through trip advisor or vrbo.

We considered this but went with one of the hotels we saw on gotoday . com.

Stayed right in the center of the city and didn't break the bank.

Hostels are usually the cheapedt option.
If you have time to come to Madrid too, you should.
