Maybe...just maybe... she wasn't who she thought she was.

I also imagine the decision for the family to publicly decry as they have is made easy by the fact that the DA will decide what to pursue based off evidence and not their feelings. They can save face and reap any financial benefits and social credit while the justice system does what they secretly wish, but won't publicly say.
