Am I required by Louisiana law to keep insurance on a car that's in my name but have no intention of driving again until I sell it? Problem is I can't afford insurance on both my new car and my old car.Any info would be appreciated!

You are required by law to have liability. Just get the minimum limits on the car you do not plan on driving and full coverage on the one you plan on driving

If you turn in the license plate to DMV you can cancel the insurance on the vehicle without penalty. But don't get caught driving it on a public road.

no intention of driving again
No insurance needed, but don't drive it
Also, with statements like this:

Are you sure you should be spending money on a new car? The insurance on the old car should be next to nothing when you declare no miles will be driven and get just minimum liability

Go to the DMV and ask for a statement of non-use form.
Be sure to ask them about the rules governing it, but unless something has changed drastically in the past year, you can bring a copy of it to your insurance company and drop the insurance without any penalty. Just don't drive the vehicle during that time.

if you drop the insurance and don't turn in the plate within xx days (I'm guessing 30), you will get a big fine.

Remember the fiasco last year where La was billing people for no car insurance as far back as 28 years ago?

If you go two days before you turn in the plates with no insurance you will be fined. Cancel registration first, then cancel ins. If you let someone test drive and something happens, you are double screwed. No ins and fine.

Suck it up man, it is not worth the hassle. Just get the very minimum, or dont buy a new car
