Is there actually that many people out there so worried about getting HIV that they are willing to take a pill, whose side effects sound like imminent death, in order to improve there chances of not getting HIV. The advertising budget for this pill has got to be astronomical.
If you pay attention, most of the pharma commercials are high cost drugs targeted towards the medicaid population. Medicaid has zero copay, and is required to provide almost everything. The only thing standing between the sale is a doctor’s prescription.

And why is it that the only straight couple is black? That's racist.

HIV is still highly prevalent among the gay community. About 80% of new HIV cases come from about 5% of the population. They have a pill that can effectively prevent HIV and market it towards the highest risk demographic.

The black chick is supposed to be the heroin junkie. Duh....
In some black and latino communities there is a statistically higher than average number of straight women who contract HIV due to their men being on the down low, then bringing it back home to them. I think the woman at the cook out is to appeal to such women.

So many gays on that commercial

This thread prompted me to do some Googling as I really thought AIDS was, by and large, under control.
HIV.GOV
In 2017, 38,739 people received an HIV diagnosis in the U.S. and 6 dependent areas
The annual number of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. remained stable from 2012 to 2016.
HIV diagnoses are not evenly distributed across states and regions. Of the 38,739 new HIV diagnoses in the U.S in 2017, 19,968 (52%) were in the South.
20,000 new cases in the South is a lot, I guess, but this pill may end up giving a real false sense of security.
Given that almost 60,000 people a year get pancreatic cancer, I wish they'd work on a pill for that.
Those folks didn't have a choice.

I'd argue HIV is under control.
Sometime c.2016 they released a research study about HIV and STDs in Baton Rouge. The most alarming aspect of the findings was that the high risk population surveyed indicated they weren't particularly concerned about contracting HIV because the cocktail was available for anyone who contracted it.
As is typical, after my first post, I started receiving Truvada ads. One was AOC asking Gilead's CEO why Truvada costs $8/mo. in Australia and $2,000/mo. in the U.S. (take the source for what it's worth).
You have to respect modern innovation. Today you can effectively contract a disease, get rid of it with a pill, and then rinse and repeat.

I think it’s like 70% of all new AIDS cases are in homosexual men.

The exact dollar amounts might be off but the point is correct. There are right-leaning groups running ads along those lines (we pay twice what other countries pay, tell Bill Cassidy to keep up the good fight, etc).
