Now I do agree that as a black man it would be harder. But hard work and sincerity trumps anything. But you would have to stay focused and not fall into the mindset that the system is against me attitude.

Doesn't it seem that "you get what you put into it" is more important then what your color is ? My theory was and is that regardless of color, the cream rises to the top.
From my standpoint I have little empathy for anyone that puts forth little effort, black or white.

Not in south east Louisiana I work at a plant. I can't tell you how bad the nepotism is here at my sight amongst a certain demographic. I am not saying that the people aren't good at their jobs but its pretty sad when they all tell you oh my dad or my parran got me on.

Is Atlanta the "center of black culture" now? Seems like it took the crown from Harlem.

I am bias. To me Harlem was a safe haven. True essence of the black experience is born in the south. New Orleans and cities like Memphis will hold the crown.

Can't change your circumstances, but you HAVE to adapt to your environment and figure out ways to get ahead that others might not have to. Victim mindset can end up being a self fulfilling prophecy more often than not.

Nepotism is the hardest to overcome, of course. Hard to find other ways to make inroads. But not impossible.

True story, I first wanted to be a truck driver as a kid. Then I wanted to be a lawyer. I loved watching old reruns law and order. I the Jack McCoy was the fricking man. Fast forward to 7th grad a lawyer comes to talk to the class. I asked him me being ignorant to the field, how much fun is it to go in the court room and make your arguments in front of everybody. He laughed and said I rarely get to do that most of my time is spent reading and review. I hated reading growing up. I then said frick it I will be an engineer since I liked math. Fast forward to today I spend so much time reading it drives me crazy procedures specs pms logs etc etc.

2018 I will commit to reading more

Nope, asking the OP. Will accept responses from any knowledgeable party, though.

If it was one thing I would tell a young black kid looking to progress in a capitalist system is to keep focus on yourself. Forget about the injustices you see, esp every little social media blowup, corrupt cops, etc. this will always happen, and always has.
Keep ur head down and work hard and you'll be better in the end.

Its human nature. Longing to be accepted by the masses. I don't care now but at one point I did.

If not reading the book check out a Youtube with him and Mitch Landrue at the Aspen Institute. Talks about growing up in the inner city and dealing with just trying to walk to school everyday without getting shot.
