As society has become more advanced, it's also become more fragile

Saw this quote in another thread...
It's very true and very ironic that as our society has grown more advanced, it is in a way much more fragile.
Society back then was so simple that it could withstand like 1/3rd of the population dying and still solider on largely unchanged.
People knew how to grow or hunt their own food, build their own homes, build and repair their own tools, etc. Self sufficiency made life more difficult, but resilient.
We've largely traded self sufficiency for efficiency, which is obviously beneficial but does have drawbacks too.
Today's society is dependent on a lot more advanced systems (internet, electricity, running water, grocery stores, ec.) that any major disruption would be catastrophic. Obviously some people would adapt better than others, but still, our society is not physically or emotionally capable of withstanding real catastrophe without losing its shite.

If something like the Black Plague happened again, society would collapse based off of this

I don’t know what you know but I do know that no one I know knows.

Or....we traded working ourselves to the bone to only die at 30 for living like virtual Kings (inb4 KANGS).

What in the hell? I've read this 3 times and I have no idea what you are trying to say.

My post isn't pining for the "good ole days" or anything like that. Obviously things are better now. It's just scary how much less control we have over things individually.

So you're saying you don't know about him knowing that he doesn't know anyone that knows about what you now know

I would imagine if you talked to someone alive during the Plague that would tell you that their lives changed quite a bit

No, society back then went through tremendous upheaval. It’s just in the distant past and not everything was written down. We do know of multiple and violent revolts which stemmed from the Black Death plus it spurred huge economic changes.
People going through the Black Death were at a complete loss. No one knew what to do. So you had some folk flagellating themselves in the streets while others engaged in end of the world orgies. If they understood how diseases spread you can bet they would’ve taken drastic measures.
But I do agree with you in that people are fragile. Some of this is people looking for the next trendy thing. Like the morons kneeling and cutting up in their search for oppression, we have people freaking out as if in survival mode.

Correct it’s the theme on Westworld isn’t it

Also we are much more mobile now. Most people travel further daily than the average person living then would travel their entire life.
This doesn't even factor in increased population and interaction with others

I have no link but I remember reading before the Pentagon fully expects more than 90% of the US to die if electricity disappeared.

Define collapse? Would we be worse off than we were in the 1300's? If not, then there is still a net gain even after the drop.

There would be massive upheaval if 1/3 of the large family or tribe you lived with suddenly died.

Crazy thing is, this is the one thing we have absolutely no control over. One giant solar flare and the resulting EMP would knock out all of our Electronics
I mean, the Carrington event was only like 150 years ago
