We are trying to save as many lives as possible. The black plague killed so many people because society wasn't prepared. We use what we learn from occurrences like the black plague to save lives.

It's very true and very ironic that as our society has grown more advanced, it is in a way much more fragile.

It's true and has been true for centuries. Think about the Neolithic. Back then, the economy was just farming or ranching. Every man could do that. You might have blacksmiths, tailors an and a few other specializations, but that was about it. If you could farm land (or hunt) you'd survive just fine. And most women knew how to work a loom for textiles.

Nowadays the division of labor is so great that society can collapse even if just a few specializations or industries are impacted. The average person simply cannot just go farm or hunt - and even if he could, the quality of life would be pretty poor. It's not as big of a deal if you've been raised in that kind of society (and your father and his father, etc.). It's a whole nother thing to have it forced on you suddenly when you're used to AC, TV, iphones, Pornhub, etc.
