I was listening to an Otis album the other night and noticed this:

just about all of her songs are covers, or songs that were "sold" to her, she wasn't a song writer, nor was Elvis, The Beatles sort of opened the door for writers/musicians recording/performing their own material

So what?

Sinatra pretty much only wrote I'm a Fool To Want You re: Ava Gardner. Everything else written by composers and lyricists like Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen and Cole Porter.

Same with Ella Fitzgerald. Great vocalists don't necessarily have to write their own material.

Bob Dylan writes his own stuff but how is his voice? Nails on a chalkboard.

The real tragedy is the loss of Otis Redding at the age of 25.

Damn, I didn't realize he was that young. I always thought The Dock of The Bay was sung by an old black man

I thought it was common knowledge that he originally sang the song. She certainly made it her own though.

I figured most people did as well. Also, in the 60's and 70's it was a pretty common occurrence for people to record songs already released by other artists.

Hell Old Time Rock and Roll was written by another writer and the version that was finally used on the record was the demo that the writer cut at Muscle Shoals. Segar tried cutting it was his band, then tried to cut it with the same studio guys at Muscle Shoals before finally just using the demo version.

Between that and Try a Little Tenderness, Otis was like 195 years old trapped in a 25 year old's body.

I was reading the comments on youtube, I didn't know, but he died three days after recording "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay". He died in a plane crash into a lake, most likely drowned. There was one survivor, he said some people survived the initial crash but never got out. Little bit ironic. He never heard the song himself.

My favorite song from his is "These Arms of Mine". Just beautiful.
