Aretha Franklin's "Respect" was Otis Redding's song

He sold it to her.
Here is the original version... (sorry Brian Williams, Aretha did not write it, it was written by a man talking to a woman, wanting respect when he gets home from work).

The real tragedy is the loss of Otis Redding at the age of 25.

Aretha did change it to be from a woman's point of view via a few lyric modifications.

Trivia tidbit: It wasn't Otis' original that inspired Aretha to cut the song, but rather this garage band remake, which she heard on a local Detroit radio station:
The Rationals - "Respect"
And for no reason at all here's another pre-Aretha garage band version, with future Mountain guitarist Leslie West:
The Vagrants - "Respect"

I figured most people did as well. Also, in the 60's and 70's it was a pretty common occurrence for people to record songs already released by other artists.

Elvis Presley ripped off a UB40 song, not a lot of people know that

Most of the songs you hear arent written by the person who sings it.
This is nothing new
