He urged her over many years to make a will. You cant force a client to do something they dont want to do.

Of course he said he did. I don't believe that. What kind of lawyer would only "urge" her. Whoever her most trusted legal source was, cost her at least $20 million most likely. That's my only point.

A couple of signatures and 2 hours of her time saves her $10s of millions.

If he couldn't get her to find the time for that, he was a very crappy consultant.

I'd guess future royalties are her most valuable asset.

It was Aretha Franklin’s first No. 1 hit, the cry of empowerment that has defined her for generations: “Respect.”

But for the roughly seven million times the song has been played on American radio stations, she was paid nothing.

American radio stations pay only the writers and publishers of a song, not the artists who perform them. “Respect” was written by Otis Redding

Some people are just unwilling to do it. It's not about finding the time. You can draw the thing up for them, but unless they sign it, it's no bueno.

Those people in Detroit aren't just "celebrating her life". They're celebrating the that estate tax that will trickle back into their community though the US Treasurv via social programs.

Luckily she had more hits.

Imagine she might also have some percentage of royalties in her various contracts.

Some people see making plans that are death related as bad juju. People in my family are notorious for this shite.
