One more time; If a person is in need of CPR, a bruised or fractured rib is the least of their problems.

Again...Good Samaritan protects you from that.

If you can show that you were CPR certified and did CPR as you were trained...you would be covered. Like someone else mentioned...as long as you weren't trying some crazy thing(like trying to trach someone with a ballpoint pin like see in the movies)...you will be protected.

Minutes matter when someone collapses. If you sit back and wait until paramedics get there...that person could be dead by then in some cases. You could at least start CPR and help keep the person alive...until the professionals arrive...then you could let them take over.

I'm not in disagreement with you. I just don't want to open myself to any possibility of injuring someone or the possibility of legal actions being taken, even with a Good Samaritan law.

So you are ok with sitting back and watching someone possibly die in front of you? Because you are so scared of being sued???

What if you are someplace where it will take a long time for paramedics to arrive?

Also...what about your family? Wouldn't you want to know how to help them if something happens? You really gonna be worried about litigation at that point?

If everyone had that attitude, a child would have died this weekend. Broken ribs only matter to a survivor, not a corpse.

Chances are slim of that happening.

That's not my fault.

Already said, I'd help my family.

How though...if you are not CPR certified?

Also....look at it from this viewpoint. Imagine someone you love is not with family or friends and suddenly collapses. Wouldn't you be grateful if a stranger started CPR on them right away? Instead of just sitting back and calling 911 and hoping they get there on time? Wouldn't you hope that they cared enough to act. And didn't just think to themselves "not my problem, I don't want to be sued over this"?

Or what if you (ThatMakesSense) collapse, I would imagine you would be thankful that someone accepted the risk and tried to save you.

I didn't get certified to help myself, I did it to help others, and in turn, I hope others are trained to help me.

FWIW the class is usually cheap and short. It's not a 3 month commitment with loans, and if you don't want to take the class, there are dozens of videos online that can show you the basic idea.

Is it really that difficult? I've dated nurses before that went over it with me. CAB right? 30 compressions, pinch nostils, seal with mouth-to-mouth, 2 breaths if necessary. Repeat.

Sure I would.

Look, I get you're in the medical profession and this is something you take seriously and want others to. I don't have a problem with that.

I was certified but I'm sure it's expired by now.

Yeah but without ever taking a class or performing on mannequins, how would you even know how to correctly give compressions?

I dated a nurse who showed me? Center of chest between the nips, one palm down and other hand on top, elbows straight, go about 2 inches deep.

Not making a mockery, but it's not rocket science is it?

You guys that aren't CPR certified and refuse to be...

Do you at least know what to do if someone is choking?? You are taught what to do for choking as well when you get CPR certified.

I've been CPR certified since I was 12 years old(got certified for a baby-sitting course for the Red Cross...that got me lots of baby-sitting gigs cause of it). I just don't understand why people would be that against something that could possibly save another person's life.

I know what to do and how to perform CPR I just refuse to get certified due to the possible legal ramifications.

Absolutely. In a somewhat similar situation, if I am in a store and a gunman comes in and starts shooting people. I am going to do everything I can to flee the store and call the police. I carry every day, but unless the gunman points his gun in my direction I am not going to shoot him. There is too much room for error. I will mourn with those that lose loved ones but at the end of the day I am responsible for my family and I am not going to put myself in a position that could be detrimental to them.

You realize that being CPR certified doesn't automatically mean you HAVE to act anytime you see someone collapse?

That is always a personal choice whether or not to intervene. Even as a nurse.....I still have that choice if I'm at the mall shopping and see someone collapse. I would of course help.....but because I wanted to.

The only thing is that once you choose to intervene....you have to stay committed to it. You can't just decide "yeah no thanks" and walk away mid compressions. You at least have to stay until some else takes over.

What legal ramifications caused by certification are you concerned with?
