According to these official looking links, you are wrong. Eta: to be fair, it's just a little more nuanced than that. The non Catholic Sponsor is really just a "witness" to the ceremony.

Good way to think of it would be it's an honorary rather than functional title.

Two of them. I make sure I give them presents for their birthday and Christmas and see them once in a while.
