Are we genetically predisposed to enjoying opiates?

I've been prescribed pharmaceutical opiates for a number of reasons, and I absolutely loathed taking them. When I got my wisdom teeth out I told the oral surgeon to give me Extra strength Tylenol because I didn't like the side effects of Percocet. I punctured my lung two years later in college at LSU, and still refused the pain meds. I don't understand want draws people to opiates. I've had my fair share of experiences with illegal substances, but painkillers were never one.

Why? Do you get euphoric?

The euphoria is nice, the itch isn't worth it

Never underestimate the feeling of euphoria. I also have a slight weakness for canabis.

If you've ever got down with brown, the itch completely destroys the high, that's what baffles me about opiates.

For me personally that's what it feels like. I take perc 10's regularly.

I'm with ya buddy!

Pill versions make my nose and eyes itch like crazy, IV makes my whole upper body itch. Sure opiates feel good and they do relieve pain, but the itching drives me nuts.

Really sucks when the pain is so bad ya literally curl up in the fetal position short of breath and sweating profusely from the sheer pain but the itching is almost as bad.

You described exactly what I felt, the itching is unbearable, so much so that the euphoric feeling is completely unnoticeable.

Hydros make me feel warm and fuzzy all over but I do go through about a 30 minute period where my legs itch some.

I could see how some people get hooked on that high getting though. Personally I don't like feeling medicated like that unless I'm going to sleep and I don't want to have a high tolerance for when I actually need opiates for pain.

I dont know, I cant take them at all. They make me sick. Which I'm happy about, kept me from abusing them as I did benzodiazepines.

I get so ill, that I'd rather deal with pain than take them.

I don't care for them either but when I need one I need one. Better than being in pain. As far as recreational use, I've never understood the allure, which is a good thing with my personality.
