you can go to a reputable doctor nowadays and get blood drawn. it costs, but you aren't put in some gov't dna database.

We gave the folks one as part of their Christmas present last year because they thought it was a neat idea.
Results were horse shi'ite.
Spoiler - every European has DNA from all over Europe after millennia of war, conquest & migration with Mediterranean blood being the worst for this.
Parents loved it and thought it was interesting and I'm happy for them but I saw the results coming a mile away.

On sale right now Ancestry . com for like $70. Usually $100. I just ordered one.

What made the results horse shite?

They sent back a "heat map" that basically looked like an overlay of the Roman Empire.
Who would have thought that Sicilians have blood from all over the Mediterranean?
Of course my mom was excited, "Look honey, were part Greek too!"
I'm not saying they were not accurate but they were pretty damn predictable. I stand by my assertion that nearly all Europeans that get one done find out they have blood from all over Europe.

Given all the different people who settled in England over the last two thousand years, how do they discern that you're English as opposed to French, say from Brittany? How would they note differences from Swiss heritage vs Northern Italian?

They are going to clone you.

My father did one. For both paternal and maternal lineage.
First map is people with similar DNA. yellow being further away, orange closer and red being fairly close. The two red dots poking through in scotland and ireland actually have our same last name.
Second photo is a migration path through history

They basically swabbed natives and collected a data base, then compare yours. Not exact, but pretty close. If you are a mutt, then it can get shady. My dad did it, and was 30% Irish, 30% English. The funny this was 1% west African, and we are white as can be.

Yeah I did one of these. Shockingly came out as 81% Iran and 19% Guyana. What I did know from family records were France/Nova Scotia and local Atakapa/Ishak Indian. Sorta interesting that they migrated from those places over time.

Does anyone else find it odd that any "reputable" genealogy checks are run by the LDS?
