For a gift for a young kid, yeah gift cards aren't a good gift. But if you're buying for a teenager or adult...gift cards are way better than buying some random item they probably won't ever use.

Giftcards are the perfect gift, if I'm receiving them.

I wouldn't give one but love getting my $100 home depot gift card each your for Christmas from a relative. I'm a fool for hand tools and one day will own every tool ever made. Bit seriously nothing is better than having the exact, specific, right tool for the job.... and It feels like you can only say "tool" so many times before a joke is made...so yes, and my tool works just fine...
