In general, I rarely wear one, but I have the confidence to do so on occasion. You don't have to be intimidated. I'm a pretty nice guy. I'll even introduce you to the ladies that I'm chatting with during the social occasion where I'm wearing one. Just relax, and don't immediately lash out at guys who may command more attention in certain situations. A little jealousy is natural. Full blown envy can be prevented.

Is a clip on less trashy if if matches well with the shirt? For example, a red tie with a black shirt, or a black tie with a red shirt.

The only scenario I can think of where a clip on bow tie wouldn't be trashy is if you're a child acting as a ring bearer in a wedding.
