People will do whatever is easiest. If there’s a robust network of bike lanes and you’re protected from cars then people will use it. It’s difficult to create a network with just a little piecemeal approach, so you end up with tiny unused sections that go nowhere.

I agree with this.

The other issue with bike lanes in the deep South is 5 months a year it's so fricking hot that no one wants to take a bike anywhere unless it's for exercise.

They're great if they're in more moderate/cool climates and if they are interconnected. Just don't think it'll catch on the South.

Biker douches typically don’t bike in the bike lane. I like them for my runs.

I was driving the other day on a road with a clearly marked bike lane. The douche biker ahead of me was still using the roadway.

It’s aspirational. We are all angry and sad all the time because everything was built for car access instead of more natural means of transportation. So a few odd people realize this subconsciously and try to change it with bike lanes and general crunchy behavior, and the rest of ridicule them and enjoy videos of bikers being knocked over by cars.

Nope.

Bike lanes are funded through "safety" initiatives. What this means is the Fed DOT hold tax dollars hostage by placing them in all different categories. In order t get them back you have to check the boxes.

So you need money to widen a road, but there is not enough money in the funding source for addressing congestion and volume issues - add a bike lane and you can widen the road with additional "safety" money.

Or is it a ‘If you build it they will come’ scenario? Or is it virtue signaling?

A road near me was widened to 4 lanes years ago. The government used eminent domain to take away parts of people’s yards and create bike lanes on either side of the new, widened ROW.

In that case they built it and no one came. I have never seen bicycles using the lanes. 90% of the time I never see bicycles in any of the bike lanes near where I live.

And yet, there is this push to add bike lanes to streets and roads.

That chalk outline they draw around the bike accident victim shows up better in a bike lane.

Yep. Have also lived in a city with trails that can get you all over the city.

They are used a lot for work commuting and leisure.

If they were built here they would be used here. The heat isn’t that bad when you aren’t 5’11 260.

It’s shown over and over and over. When you invest in good, clean, usable alternative means of transit, people use them.

Yet people in this state are too goddamn retarded to see it.
