I think way more than 10% of people with children realize that seeing a reference to homosexuality will not result in their children making a "gay lifestyle choice".

Unless you are using 'coming out' differently than I thought, it appears to be a gay reference. My bad if it isn't.
it only turned into a gay reference when people asked what it meant after the movie came out and the director said "sure...let's make it a coming out reference" and then peoples head exploded

There's much more to a relationship than what you do in bed

I don't know man
I just read the interview where he stated that he left the ad lib in to see where people took it and they all immediately took it to be gay so he ran with it

I want my kids to know that there are gay people in the world and that I will love them unconditionally whether they're gay, straight or bisexual. I don't see anything inherently wrong with "gay lifestyle references" whatever that is.

Did anyone say that a reference would have a negative impact on a kid? No more than when my drunk BIL lets go an F bomb at Thanksgiving, would rather him not do it, but it isn't going to have a terribly detrimental effect on my children.
However, I would not ask him nor pay him to do it for 'shock' value?

Yes, and I want to teach them those things on my terms. I don't want to open up a Golden Book and see a centerfold either, even though I want them to know that naked pretty people are in the world.
There are a million avenues for social statements, a childrens movie or a comic book don't have to be those avenues.

Fair enough. Not totally analogous, but I get it. Are you cool with children's movies containing Christian overtones?

I find it hard to believe that Archie bunker would take a bullet for a fruit. Especially after the way he talks to meathead.
Posted on 7/14/14 at 4:08 pm to AU_RX
Archie bunker is from all in the family

What did you mean by it?

yes, they happen to concur with my beliefs. But even if I went to a Christian movie, I wouldn't want to see pictures of Jesus hanging on the cross in technocolor for my 3 and 5 year old. If I wanted them to see that I would have taken them to the Mel Gibson film. It is just about not being surprised at the content.
Hell I have a gay nephew, we love him and are glad he is finally happy. I feel like I can adequately address that with my kids, but if I bought a book to help the discussion...I would like to open it up and have it talk about acceptance of others, not hatred of others. If people cared about this directors social viewpoint, they would be flocking to areas to here him talk about his views.

Are you going to tell your son it's ok if he wants to like boys instead of girls?

I absolutely will. Pretty sick to tell him otherwise IMO.
Eta: assuming the topic comes up. Not just randomly out of the blue

I mean of the 1000s of parents greeting new kids into the world today, I doubt more than 1 in 10 is envisioning a future that includes an alternative lifestyle.
Not that if they see a gay reference it is going to have a huge impact. Just that if given the choice, like if you go to a childrens movie, most parents don't want those scenes, comments, or insinuations no matter how vague, shown in front of the kids.

Archie died for me in the early 60's, so he's as old as dirt, let him take one for a friend.

It's pretty sick alright. Good luck
