LINK

Don’t know if it’s been shared yet, but thought I’d do it on this anniversary of the lunar landing.

quote:

Included real-time elements:
All mission control film footage
All TV transmissions and onboard film footage
2,000 photographs
11,000 hours of Mission Control audio
240 hours of space-to-ground audio
All onboard recorder audio
15,000 searchable utterances
Post-mission commentary
Astromaterials sample data

Want to kill some time, you can easily do it with this site. Amazing timeline with video and audio of every step of the journey from earth to the moon and back. It gives you a real appreciation for the monumental task. Still gives me chills.

I spent hours with that link a few weeks back. Absolutely incredible and I cant imagine the amount of man hours it took so many people to accomplish that.

When the president put that challenge out, NASA had to shite itself knowing what it would take to get there.

HUGE.... When I remind myself that it was 1969 it makes it even more impressive.

The entire software that was aboard the command module could probably be put in your phone now.

And in relation, the software that was aboard the command module would have filled a room up had they not invented and made some changes specifically for the Apollo Missions. This is why it pisses me off that people think space exploration is a waste of money. There were/are things that have come from it that we now use as modern technology.

I seriously can’t wait for Artemis to become a reality. Not sure if 5 years is a bit too ambitious, but I’m just delighted at the thought of returning to the moon.

frick software. The HARDWARE could be emulated. On your phone. Emulating the NES to play Super Mario Bros is a FAR greater task than emulating the AGC to navigate to the moon.

The original plan was for a massive 10 story spaceship to land on the moon, which would have taken a rocket twice the size of the Saturn V to lift it. When that idea proved impractical, the backup plan was to launch a space station where the moon craft would be assembled. That proved unworkable too. One guy came up with the idea of a separate command module and lander, which required the smaller Saturn V and made the entire mission feasible.

Great find, thanks for sharing.

When it was happening, I was working for Amoco in Chicago. Some of the stores on North Michigan put TVs in their front windows and at lunch, crowds would stand on the sidewalks to watch the latest, and again when we left work before going to the L.
Listened to radio in the apartment and a friend brought a TV over so we could watch the landing.

Then got to see them live and up close in the parade after. Feels as if it were yesterday.
