Anyone use a radar detector

Does anyone have any experiences or stories with them and are they worth using? was thinking about getting one -- I have to travel to Dallas and Houston a few times a month and wonder if they'd be helpful

Just use waze. Works better than radar. (In populated areas)

Are you driving a 1992 Celica?

I used to have a Beltronics RX65 that worked great until my cousin stole it
All the buzz in the radar detector community is about Uniden, whom now makes a top notch detector that rivals Escort/Beltronics and Valentine
Run one along with Waze and you should be safe from road pirates

I did in 1986. Saved me a few times.

Yep, I have an old escort somewhere here. It would go off for the doors in town but on the road outside of town it was good if you were behind someone else.

Currently use a Uniden R7 pictured above. It is the longest range radar detector on the market at this time. It also has arrows pointing to the source similar to the Valentine 1. I've used various detectors over the years from Escort and Valentine. The Uniden has been my favorite thus far. However, I'm waiting for Radenso to release their new detector for 2020 called "Theia". Suppose to be a total game changer. The biggest thing with detectors these days is K-band false alerts caused by blind-spot monitoring systems, adaptive cruise, and store door openers. With far more advanced hardware and AI the Theia is suppose to recognize and filter out 100% of false alerts. Also, with the far more advanced hardware the range it will have should far surpass anything on the market today.

Waze is a great tool to go along with a radar detector. Bad thing with Waze is that it is essentially useless off interstates or major highways. It is also useless against moving radar on any highway.

And I find it often warns you too late.

IMO you should Waze and have a decent detector. I grew up in MS and when I was doing a lot of driving to and from LSU I found that worked best. Waze covered almost everything once I got into LA but MS is so rural that a radar can work better on long stretches of highway. I have used the same Escort detector for almost ten years and it has worked fine as far as brands
I’ll mention something that a lot of folks don’t bring up and that’s just having good situational awareness when speeding(anytime you drive really). If you see cars ahead of you all tap their brakes suddenly, slow down cause it could be a cop. Be careful going over hills, wooded areas on interstates, etc. Learn to do these things by habit and you may go years without a speeding ticket and hopefully without accidents.

Ya, there was a time when Waze allowed you to adjust the distances for police alerts. It is now locked at 1/2 mile. You used to be able to adjust up to 2 miles. Waze (now owned by Google) was feeling the heat for PDs and essentially locked it 1/2 mile voice alerts. You can still see ahead on the map for alerts though.

This is true. Always be mindful of your surroundings. Even the most expensive detector is little match for "Instant-On" radar since the officer is not transmitting anything until they press the "XMIT/HLD" button. Hopefully you're not the target when the radar unit is transmitting for a brief second. If you are the target and haven't slowed down, your expensive detector just became a impending speeding ticket notifier. That's why range is very important for a radar detector. You want to detect those brief shots of radar up ahead before you are in the target zone.

A radar detector in combination with Waze is a great duo.
Been using detectors pretty much since I've been driving, 30+ years. Feel naked without one.
Please dont waste your money on a V1.

I bought a radar/laser detector when I was 16.
got 2 tickets in 6 months because I thought I was invincible
now that I have matured and realize I can go 5-10 over most places (besides small towns) and I get to my destination almost in the same amount of time with no stress of checking an app or every time the thing in the window beeps, life is better
also, get pulled over with a radar detector there is a 99.5% chance you are getting a ticket
