I personally wouldn't do it to my piano, although I did strongly consider a player system for a while. (The manufacturer doesn't offer a built in as an option.) Its just too destructive to something I want to last for many many years. I paid a premium for a very fine instrument, seems crazy to chop it up like that. Plus, like all technology, it will become obsolete and antiquated quickly.
This actually happened to a customer of ours. He had a new from dealer retro on a very nice yamaha baby grand, purchased in 2003. had a power surge in home and just the controller was destroyed. old system was far obsolete. only solution was for a new retro. they had to chop it up quite a bit. Customer was never satisfied and ended up selling it

yeah those yamahas are really nice and well made. Will last thorough all the kids needs.
Id say get a second piano, cheaper and easier option.
The secondary market for uprights is always tough (unless you have a high end handmade piano like Steinway or Bosendorfer.) A 12 year old pramberger upright will be painful to sell, you wont get much for it. Id find a place in the house for two pianos.
I built a new damn house for my 6'10" grand

This is exactly the kind of thing Im talking about.
When you have a something special and made to last 100 years, its seems wrong to basically destroy it in order to improve it for (potentially) only a few years.
A bunch of German master craftsmen put their blood sweat and tears into handbuilding a beautiful thing that I paid big money for....I'm not fricking with that. I want my grandkids to still have it if they want.

What benefits would you have by practicing on a silent piano? You might be reinforcing muscle memory, but that’s about it. If you are practicing without listening to your tone production, phrasing and tempo, you are not practicing at all. I wouldn’t waste the money on that. Curious, but what music are you working on?

silent piano
you hear it through headphones...dynamics etc are preserved

I agree and would never do something like that to my Steinway.

I would want to hear the sound production in the room I am practicing in. Does the headphone sound give you that experience? Carpeted, stone and wood flooring and size of the room will affect sound and I’m not sure that would come through the headphones. I had a digital years ago that I practiced on with headphones and really hated it.

of course you lose room effects but you still have the full experience of the touch and feel of the action and pedals...huge boon for practicing on a real piano with other people around

Dang that is big ole beast.
Yeah, I know I would not get much on mine. It is a beautiful piano and sounds great, but in the end just a high quality Samick. Not even close to Steinway or Bosendorfer.
Cannot wait for the look on the wife's face when I tell her we need a 2nd piano if she wants peace and quiet

what's the point in a silent musical instrument?
Silent Trumpet systems are pretty popular among trumpet players who live in apartments and such. It's a special mute that damps the sound and has microphones so you can wear headphones and still listen to yourself play.

Those transacoustic are pretty damn cool.
Getting a near concert grand sound from something as small as a U1 is something I would like to hear in person though.
If I was buying a new acoustic now though, I sure as heck would figure out how to afford one of those.

Lol, no. She is a proper human being.
I would put her in a 10 status though, because she is a complete package. Attractive and amazing talent
And a mom now
