I have the main gear (plastic of some type) that sheared off. Is there an efficient way to fix this thing?

I'd start by ordering a new one

I do most of my home repairs myself. When it comes to garage doors, particularly after I nearly fricked myself up, I hire the professionals. Any time you have to start messing with the cables and brackets that are under extreme tension, you are asking to get seriously injured.

Call a pro, have them swap it out, and go to bed with the confidence that you will have all of your fingers and hands.

I don't think that's an option.

I called around. The part is $30 and for them to install is $200.

Yep. One of my springs snapped a few years ago. I have no idea how I held control of my bowels or bladder. A piece went flying across the garage and left a dent in the water heater. Which was 20 feet away. I pulled in, got out of the car and hit the button on my remote. Thankfully it was the other spring from the drivers side and I had not walked around there yet. Now I make sure that I and my wife stay in the vehicle until the door is fully closed.

Maybe try calling the manufacturer and seeing if parts are available.. Honestly I'd just replace it.
