Anyone on here moved long distance before?

I'm most likely going to be moving to California by either summer or end of the year. How big of a pain in the arse is it? What kind of problems am I looking at? Should I just drive off a cliff, instead?

Might help to know where you're moving from.

You better check out the women before you go. Parts of California are not like the other. One year I said frick it and did what you're proposing. I had the money to do so. Do you?

Company paying for it? How much shite you moving?

Then rest assured that it, indeed, will suck. California is great, though.
Overall, It's not terrible. I moved from NJ to TX over the summer.
Take a couple days off work, and drink while you load all your shite up. Drive out there for the next couple days.

Going there for a job, gonna be living in SF for a couple months but then moving down to SoCal. Work is willing to help cover some of it, but I'm not expecting much. Not much shite, actually considering just flying out there and buying new stuff or having stuff shipped to me, too.

Moved from Louisiana to Colorado 4 years ago. Best decision I ever made

Thanks lol. Yeah, as of right now I'm looking at beginning of June, but it could be delayed until around November/December. I'd prefer to get out there for summer, but money talks so we'll see how the budget is doing come summertime.

It's actually exactly like moving short distances. Except there's just more miles in between places.

Depends on what all you bring.
There have been times in my life where all of my valuable posessions could fit in my car, and times where I traveled without a car.
It's only as tough as you make it.

I've moved across the country three times. It's not bad. How much stuff do you have? Are you U-Hauling or having a moving company do it? Either way, it's just like moving anywhere, just over a few more days than normal. The drive across is what you make of it. You can knock it out fairly comfortably in 3days, with time to stop for sight-seeing, anything less and it starts to get painful. I personally recommend taking 4 or more days (if you can) to do some sight-seeing. Carlsbad Caverns, the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, are my favorites from my trip.
As far as things to look out for, if you will be driving across the desert during the summer, it is obviously going to be extremely hot, and there are LONG stretches between gas stations, often with no cell service. Make sure you're managing your gas well, and have a case of emergency water in the car. I wouldn't let yourself get below the 100 mile range before filling up.
What part of Cali you moving to? Keep in mind that hotels can be pretty pricey in major cities like San Diego or LA, so it helps to have your permanent or temporary living arrangements figured out well in advance if possible, or you can burn through funds (at least for me, anyway, not exactly rich). Even a budget motel can run you up to $200 a night here.
Other than that, it's all pretty standard stuff. Hope you have a good move!

Moved from PA down to Baton Rouge. The drive is probably the worst part of it. See if you have a friend willing to drive with you, will make it 100x better.
As far as moving crap, I was able to fit everything in my car. Are you planning on driving/moving your car there?

We moved from Washington DC to Seattle Washington.
My wife's employer covered all the moving cost. We had folks come pack up the entire house even crateing up the TV's. Professional movers loaded our stuff and shipped it across country. They even trailered our cars out there as well.
Since we were moving for her work and I had no rush to get out there the dog and I took a rental car, also paid for by her company, and drove across the county. I drove 4000 miles through 17 states. One of the best experiences of my life.
The packing and moving of the physical stuff is the pain in the arse part but you can greatly help yourself by paying professionals to do it.
We actually moved again one year ago from Seattle to Dallas and hired pros to pack and move us.

Yea. From upstate NY to Nebraska. Likely staying here for good. frick NY.

This may not sound right, but it's all in how you get your shite packed

Thats what I would do. It can run 20-30 grand to move a house of stuff. You'll be better off just packing a tooth brush, and buying what you need.

We packed our entire house. Between the truck, hotels during the trip and to stay until our new house was ready, food and other traveling expenses, it cost a lot of money. Not nearly 20k but a lot still.

You are single with not much shite, its gravy. Leave it behind and get new shite from craigslist if you are making decent money.
