Thinking of switching from Verizon, but concerned about coverage in Louisiana.

Sprint sucks. I think it will start to see alot of improvements with the T-Mobile merger though.
Coverage isn't their only problem. Sprint is archaic. Can't use data while on a voice call, so for example you can't run GPS or look up a movie time or anything while on the phone with someone. Incoming calls will only ring 23 seconds and you cannot extend it. Since the network sucks, sometimes 15 seconds will go by before your handset even receives the call from the network, so you have about 5 seconds to answer your phone in time.
Anyway, hopefully the merger will help. T-Mobile has the network tech but not enough physical towers. Sprint has the physical towers but shitty tech.
ETA: Apparently in 2017 they rolled out Sprint Calling PLUS - allowing certain devices to use data while on a call if on LTE or WiFi.
Some devices...if on LTE...in 2017. And that's touted as an upgrade.
Like I said, they're archaic.

I have the pixel 4 through Sprint. It works fine for voice calls. But there is so spots where it says no data. Hopefully will improve when merged with T mobile.
No matter what the reason. You have 30 days to bring back and get a refund with sprint
