If so, how's the pay? Like your job? We're all anonymous here. Be honest please.

I sell a lot or equipment out there.

Most people seem to like it, it's not Dow by any means

Posted here a couple times recently. Gonna be out of a job soon and thinking about switching gears. My cousin works there and told me he could get me a job easy. Didn't get the details, but must be some entry-level thing and decent hourly pay. Heard you can advance well with having a 4 year degree so we'll see. Still not sold on it, but I'm considering it.

I guess you could be a maintenance hand if your connection has some ins with the contractor. Your not going to walk through the gate and become an operator making OT baller double time and a half.

Oh yeah I doubt the operator thing would happen. He's pretty high up and tight with the contractors though. He's given me LSU football tickets a few times bc the contractors give them to him. I honestly have no idea how much money I'd be making. I would just hope it would be around $22 an hour. That's the kind of raise I'm looking for after leaving my gig now

I worked maintenance for Turner Industries at Shintech's Plaquemine facility for four years. Started at the bottom (college dropout--yeeeaaaah buddy), which was 15/hr as an oiler (keeping up the pumps) then once they started the expansion project they offered me a job as a millwright helper. Worked hard for a couple years and eventually was bumped up to millwright classification. Everybody received 1.50 raise a little before I left. I was offered a job as an operator at one point. The vacancy was because of that incident when the operator died in a nitrogen filled vessel. Anyhoo, I declined because I knew plant life was not for me. It's been almost two years now that I quit. Driving big trucks now and not looking back. Feel free to ask specific questions though. I still know a lot of guys that work maintenance there. Top pay for millwrights when I left was 26.50

Labor Statistics

You'd have to ask him, but according to the statistics above, $22/hr is median pay for a millwright. Entry level will be quite a bit lower, but maybe not so much, being the industry average is a little higher in the Gulf Coast.

If I had to guess, you'd be looking at more like $16 - 18 /hr starting, but again, I'm no expert.

ETA: yeah, the guy above me sounds like he knows more than me. buuuuuuut I wasn't too far off.

I sell equipment and service out there too. We have a service contract with the maintenance engineering team.

Yes if you can get in as a millwright helper it'll be around 18/hr. 20/hr max. They recently lost some good workers out there, so I'd imagine if one has something to prove and shows it he can move up quickly

Get with a contractor and learn a trade. Majority of them will pay for schooling.

I'm in the same boat as you then. I know plant life isn't for me, but I'm not sure how long I'm willing to commit to it. I make 35k right now but its a cake job. I hate to make the same amount over there, bust my arse to make it, and knowing i wont stay in the field for very long

I hear ya,man. It's really not worth the trouble if you're not in it for the long haul. I found myself quite miserable towards the end of my time there. I took a risk changing careers, especially after solidifying myself in that one spot, but I tell you what I feel way better about my lifestyle now after following my gut feeling.

Anytime. Been lurking the OT for years, but I had to come out of my shell for this one. I spent too much time over there not to give some insight

At this point in time with the way Dow operates, I would actually consider Shintech a better job than Dow. From what I have heard they have brought back retirement insurance for Shintech employees. Used to work next door to them at Axiall (formerly Georgia Gulf).

There are a lot of plants that are a better option than Dow.

Why is that? I have a friend that just started at Dow and he loves it so far.
