is this sort of like a vanity publishing thing or are you trying to sell them?

Self-publishing is not the same as vanity publishing. Yes, I try to sell my books. My first book, a mystery set in Bogalusa, sold well. I promoted it heavily. I advertised on a Bogalusa blog and got a Bogalusa bookstore and a couple of other Louisiana bookstores to carry it. I did direct mail advertising and touted it heavily on social media. It sold a few thousand copies. I have not made the same effort in my subsequent works, and none have sold well. My most recent work, a short story published a week ago, has sold exactly one copy.

I was once in a day-long state department of education training meeting at which the presiding person asked for a volunteer to read material from one of the books of materials being presented. I volunteered and read the page-long passage, after which the presenter complimented me by saying, "You read that very well." I responded, "I should have - I wrote it."

And I'm not an educator by training or qualification.

I have a historical fiction (mid 9th century Anglo-Saxons and Vikings during the Great Heathen Invasion) and a contemporaryish crime comedy with influences from my hometown as well as ski town culture working right now. I will probably never finish them.

I had Grok discuss the differences between vanity publishing and self-publishing. Here is the summary:

Vanity Publishing often involves paying for the privilege of being published with less control, potentially lower quality, and limited distribution, but with some services provided.

Self-Publishing offers more control, potentially higher quality if the author invests in professional services, broader distribution possibilities, and higher royalty rates, but requires the author to take on all aspects of the publishing process.

i had an idea for a book once.
me and a buddy got as far as writing down a rough plot outline.

then The Hangover came out.

and while it wasn’t exactly the same story, our rough plot idea hit enough same areas as that we would have been accused of just ripping it off and changing details for our story so we never got further than that.

i’m a realist, so i know the odds of our book ever getting off the ground were astronomically slim without the movie ever happening.
But with the movie our odds sunk to somewhere below negative infinity.

My sister's friend (no pics) is writing a Civil War novel, using several of her ancestors as characters.

Always write what you know, people will connect with your writing much deeper if they can feel your own connection to your characters.

Some of them were in the Confederate Army, so she touches on the actions they were involved in.

I've self-published 3. Naturally, I think they're pretty good. It's that whole selling them thing that's a problem.

I've published four novels and two short stories since I retired in 2002. I'm currently working on a novel (about half finished) and another short story (running the idea around in my head).
Did you self-publish or were you offering a publishing deal?

That’s Bernard Cornwell territory. Was he an influence of yours?

Yes.

Came out last year.

It’s relatively easy and inexpensive these days with Amazon print on demand.

A proofreader I used to work with has written 3 novels and sells them on Amazon. The first book got tons of great reviews UNTIL Amazon somehow figured out that most of the great reviews came from her friends, relatives, colleagues, etc. Amazon yanked those reviews. She was devastated.

But I’m still insanely impressed by the fact that she has three books on Amazon. (She used Amazon kdp to publish them herself, if anyone’s interested in her how-to.)

You should go for it! Life is way too short to simply ignore a notion. If you're thinking about doing it, go ahead and start.

I'm writing a story now. Bronze Age/Scythian setting. I have good days and bad days. Not expecting much from it once I'm finished. I do enjoy the overall creative process. My bad days are usually due to a lack of confidence. Steven Pressfield's book 'The War of Art' is good advice.

Good luck! The idea deserves life.
