Anyone have any ideas on how to clean a shingle roof?

Googling says never ever pressure wash a roof despite some people doing it. It'll absolutely remove granules and cause lifting. Also read mixed thoughts on using chemicals. Got about a 10 yr old roof on my rental house that has some soot looking stains on roof which is fairly steep pitch too...

You think spraying a joe max and bleach solution and garden hose rinsing can cause damage?

I would leave it and hope for a decent rain to dilute the chemicals as they run off into the grass or beds.
