I kinda did this once... The first thing she told me was that she just broke up with her boyfriend. Then I pulled that. It worked. Only time I've ever done it. So it seems to me its a 100% type thing.

Closest to that for me was in college at a dance club and I asked a girl who I was friends with if she wanted to dance. I got the "I have a hurt foot" excuse and it pissed me off. Best I've seen was one night at the Varsity. My friend saw an OT7, IRL9, walking past. He stopped her and pointed at me telling her "my friend said you have a nice rack". She looks at me, I'm thinking I'm about to get bitch slapped, and say's thank you.
My friend follows that up with "I agree with him, you do have a nice rack". That's all it took, he had her in the bag a couple of hours later.
Everyone in our group couldn't believe he had just pulled that off.

I was at a trade show standing around with a bunch of colleagues when a IRL9 comes strolling down the aisle. Guys are all commenting under their breath to turn around and look because you aren't going to believe this girl, blah, blah, blah.
I spin around and walk straight to her with a big smile. I give her the "Hey! I haven't seen you in ages, how have you been?" bit. She looks puzzled for a second, gives me a huge hug and we chit chat. She agrees to meet for Happy Hour after the show (she actually showed) and I go back to my buds. They are all "How do you know that girl?" and I am all "No clue who she is but that always works."
Moral of the story, no one in a business setting wants to be the person that doesn't remember someone. I figured if she called me out I was just going to tell her I was chatting her up because I was bored.
Aftermath. She met us all at Happy Hour and after about three drinks one of my asshat buddies blabbed what I had pulled. She got the arse that no one said anything sooner and left. You know how you know the story is true? Because I didn't get anywhere with her. If I was making it up, this would have ended differently.

The story I told is true and I really don't see anything unbelievable about. I did it really just as an experiment and because my buddy was egging me on to see what would happen. It's not like the chick was a supermodel or anything.

I pretty much do that whenever its last call and I haven't found anything. It has worked but its not 1 out of 10, more like 1 out of 50.

As a sociologist I would like to offer my hermeneutical approach to exegete this story for the common reader. Notice he starts off with some smoke and mirror statistics to support his ensuing dramatization. Next the details are lacking on the appearance of someone he actually met at a bar. His female companion is just some chick. Had he actually hooked up, he would have at least given her hair and eye color. Then clearly made the story up, so he has not actual closer. So the girl in his story follows him around. No details of her what so ever indicate this is a fabricated tale. Lastly she follows him and his buddy. Now unless he propositioned his buddy's girl friend, why include his buddy in this statement? The reason is because he and his buddy were alone the whole night and he added his imaginary friend a tag along to the actual events of the night. He then has a Freudian slip because he admits his was a story not an experience.
