I'm scared, but at 40 it's kind of nice to feel a bit unsettled. I've worked hard to get this opportunity and it would be stupid not to explore it. I've never had a professional mentor, and the guy offering is a director at this company and very damn smart, so being under his wing is intriguing. He wants me to get a PE under him and that's really something that could effect my life for the better.

It sounds like an incredible opportunity, and you'd be remiss if you didn't fully consider it. I'm lucky that, if I don't like it, it'll only be a year of my life, as I'm obtaining my CPA.
The roughest thing for me was losing the comrade ire of an office. In my situation, I hardly ever see people that I work with, and am only forced to communicate once a week, over the phone.

I hated travel when I did it. It was really hard being away from family so often and I felt like I couldn't make many friends because I was gone so often. I also couldn't plan ahead to do stuff during the week. I value some structure and a normal lifestyle, so I found a different job. I'm way happier now.
If your wife is ok with it, give it a shot. At least it is only a couple days a week.

if your wife suggests that you take the job that requires more travel, it means that she is cheating on you and wants more time to spend with her part-time lover.

It's a tough balance... doing what's best for them and what's best for you.
Yup. 3 days a week isn't bad, though. No way I could do my job with young children. I'm sure traveling half the year is already hard enough on married people. Just depends on the length and frequency. It's not an easy lifestyle for everyone.

Me personally I wouldn't take a job that required much travel at all....I like coming home at night and spending time with my wife and kids.

Yea, I've made some great friends over the last couple if years and that part of my life will suffer, but what can you do? They all travel for work, as oceanographers, and love it.

I wouldn't say i would kill for a desk job because I would get bored easy. But i wouldn't mind having a job only traveling 3 days a week. Thats not bad at all.
For comparison, Ive spent 1.5 years out of the last 3 out of the country. It doesn't get easier especially missing anniversaries and 1st birthdays. And its not just a few days here and there. Its 7 months at a time
