Who makes you pay to turn it off? I'm just dipping my toe into the possibility of getting a newer vehicle so educate me

Most options you can turn off which makes me wonder why people are btching about them, if they go out you will never know so why care. Even the big evil screen can be turned off. I never had to pay to turn them off.

Backup cameras are fine Other shite gets old

I had to back up a...probably mid teens vehicle for a lady the other day because she could NOT get it into this space.

Minivan not unlike mine but newer.
No backup camera. I have never been more appreciative of mine. It was a pain in the arse and I was second guessing myself because of the lack of visibility. I got it in there fine but...yeah.

frick the old way we did it we probably ran over a lot more stuff in the process. I'll take the tech headache over worse options, even if it costs more.

I wish I could pick and choose what I get but I don't run a car factory. Someone must be buying them

This line would work if we were really allowed to choose what features we want, a la carte. But there’s not that much choice. You’re forced into expensive packages. And you’re forced to buy AFM engines and auto-stop etc. So sure, I can turn off the auto-stop every time I get in the truck, but I’d rather not have it in the first place. I’d rather not have been forced to pay for it in the first place.

As I said this is the one feature I hate, the rest I have no problem with. No problems in 11 1/2 years with bells and whistles and my driving experience has been all the better for it. I am not young like many would think but with my month long road trips around this country they are most welcome.

Okay so he can buy a custom built car. Honestly seems like a market niche that could make someone a lot of money.

Vehicle that is 4 wheels, a serviceable engine, 2-4 doors, manual EVERYTHING.

Call it an Edsel or a Nash. Just legal enough to get on the road. Cheap as hell.

Like printing money, right?

Or are people gonna want to start adding more and more creature comforts and electronics until they start costing as much as the new cars to integrate?

I'd be looking for the best vehicle for use (space, passengers, cargo) with the best safety tech (and if I have to deal with some creature comfort screens...eh, I can turn it off and live)

And the best warranty for the best price.

I mean I can't find a rotary phone anymore either,

I fought the future long enough. It's tiring, and I won't win.

As previously stated yes, but you have to every time you start the vehicle, no permanent off.

You can't drive while holding your phone to your ear anymore but you can drive with a computer screen on your dashboard. Makes sense

Of course I would rather it wasn't there. But if it's a few buttons to turn off...that ain't a dealbreaker.

I turn the captions on every time I watch a video on YouTube too.

I don't complain about an option some people may hate.

I worked this up for you too

While I respect your opinion, tech is here to stay and if you want to buy a new vehicle you have to deal with it. Turn it off or don't, but in my experience it has made my driving better, and with no extra cost after purchase. As has been suggested find a pre-tech vehicle and be happy without it. If you are charged to turn it off then find a better brand of vehicle.

So your opinion is that having to turn a feature you don't like off (and having the ability to) is worse than having all the cool stuff you do like? And what if you can turn it off with a button or knob?
You like buttons and knobs don't you?

Having the option to watch whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want is worth a couple button presses to me. The fact that it can't scan my brain to know my hearing is shite...I can live with.

Fair point.

Man I'm not your enemy here I get your position...i wish I could walk onto a lot and say "I want exactly the vehicle I want in the color, interior, style I want with only the features I want and I want to pay not a penny more than it costs to make."

But that ain't reality.

Definitely agree here.

Like I said I was a Luddite, and a devout one.

Happenings in my life have made me see the light and abandon that outmoded way of thinking.

I've done numerous comparisons at this point and believe it or not overall (and obviously some brands vs other brands have a huge swing) modern cars are surprisingly at least marginally less expensive to own than decades past.

I couldn't believe it until I crunched the numbers. Insurance is definitely more but the rest?

I bought a new vehicle last year. It has a bunch of bells and whistles. I've found myself slowly turning off those features one by one because it just sucks and ruins the driving experience.

Auto start/stop
Adaptive cruise control
Lane assist
Auto tilting mirrors
Android Auto blows, disconnects sometimes and won't allow audio to play through the speakers from some phone apps
Tons of cameras and don't always work, will put the car in reverse and the screen will be black

Agree on the start/stop
I like adaptive cruise control, my former VP was a speed daemon on our way to a quail and pheasant hunt, I set it and didn't have to worry.
Auto tilting mirrors I have and haven't even noticed.

Android Auto, if you use a VPN like Malwarebytes it will stop working, but Android Auto with Waze got me through 7K miles through the NW and SW for almost three months.

My Mazda and Subaru have been good to me, obviously this isn't a warranty.
