Just made it to Day 100. Father Mike seems like a cool guy. The Old Testament goes hard af.

Just listened to Judges 19-21 about the Levite traveling to Gibeah, and all I can say for you Benjamintes out there is

Ive tried a couple times. I like the format of jumping to the gospel every now and then. Never made it all the way through. My drives are long and multiple episodes gets tiring.

Leviticus and Numbers are slogs, but once you make it through those, it seems to gather some steam.

And, yeah, the format is great. I've never been able to make it through a straight read because of some of those initial dense Old Testament books.

Excellent use of that meme.

Yes I feel a lot of "I'm gonna read the entire Bible!" plans end in those books. Two of the most difficult reads and they are right at the front. Makes people think it's all going to be like that when it's really not. Rest of the Old testament is a lot of interesting history.

Some of that Old Testament seems like it would be super tedious and boring

As stated, leviticus and numbers are brutal slogs.

Bible in a year does a good job of mitigating this without skipping them. Its a really good format to follow and was designed strictly for making the book as readable as possible. Even still, those two are slogs.

Yeah, but it's also where a lot of the hardcore stuff is too. God wasn't the one in those days.

You have tons of interesting stories in Judges, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings. The book of Ruth is one of my favorites. But yeah a lot of people never get there because you can’t get through Leviticus and Numbers.

On day 78.

Friend of mine compared it to drinking from a water fountain. Sure, there’s a bit that you miss… but it’s satisfying your thirst.

Don’t stress about the parts that are listing family names and sounds like reading a phone book. Just stay on track.

Oh absolutely.

Haha the southern Baptist in me feels my statement was heretical almost but I meant in a listening sense , especially the Old Testament law and Judean customs and rituals that are super antiquated and don’t apply to modern Christianity

I find myself Googling so much stuff that gets glossed over in the podcasts where I'm like, "Wait, wut?". Father Mike generally does a great job of providing context though.

I have completed several of these programs.

Bible Study Tools dot com offers several - such as normal book order, thematic, and chronological formats in numerous translations/versions. Completed these three and all were good. The chronological was most helpful for my understanding. David Cochran Heath has a great voice and does a great job of using that voice to keep the context clear and interesting.

J. Vernon McGee did a very long 5 year version, but he wanders into politics and his theological opinions. His views are dated.

David Suchet (actor famous for his portrayal of the fictitious detective Poirot) did a Roman Catholic oriented reading which I enjoyed very much. His voice is pleasing and his delivery is really good. Not my denomination, but I enjoy hearing another version to better understand the differences and clarify my own beliefs.

I might try the Mike Schmitz version at some point, but have not yet. His voice is good in other things and as long as he sticks to the actual text, it might be a good exercise.

It can be. But if you work with a good study Bible and concordance for context, it can become quite interesting

Let me know when Brandon Sanderson re-imagines it.
